OT: Braves get Dempster

  • Here's the deal. Yeah, it's a 2 month rental. But we are trying to win the World Series. With RD, we've got a shot. Without him, no shot.

Have to have a guy like him in the post season.

Exactly. And who knows, he might re-sign and do a new deal in Atlanta after the season? Still, teams make these kind of moves when there going for it all the time. Its what you have to do to make a run in that year. Period.
    .
Hope it works out and we hear later tonight its gone through.

  • Basically, the Cubs are selling high on Dempster's over-inflated numbers this year, something the Braves should have done with Jurrjens last year. Granted, Dempster is much more reliable than Jurrjens, on average. It's rather astonishing that Jurrjens has a career ERA of 3.5..

You don't give up a top 50 MLB prospect to rent a 35 year old above-average starter for 10-12 games. Hell, you don't trade a top 50 MLB prospect to rent Bob Gibson in his prime to pitch 10-12 games.

BIg BIG difference in the Cubs dealing Dempster and us last year with JJ. We were in a pennant race, the Cubs are not. They are sellers, we were not. I get hind sights 20-20 now and sure we could have gotten a nice deal for him last year - but last year we wanted the guy to anchor our rotation. And who knows, maybe the guy finds himself again? It better be soon (g)

Still, no way we would have dealt him last year regardless.

Teams making runs at the pennant do it every year at the trade deadline. Many deals are with players who contracts are running out. And maybe, lets just say maybe Atlanta knows things about Delgado we don't? It is a possibility. Still if you can improve your club now and make a run - I am all for it. Yes we know your not. There are many ways to win in baseball and everyone doesn't always agree. I'm not even sold RD turns out to be great anyways? JMHO.

There is also no guarantee we can't resign Dempster so then were not renting him?

The Braves are about to give up on Jurjjens, and I am pretty confident that somebody is going to pick him up and get him fixed. He has a physical issue and a mechanical issue which has led to a decrease of 4-5 mph on his fastball -- 4-5 mph on a fastball is the difference between a front-line Major League starting pitcher and a guy who can't get hitters out at AA. If a pitcher gets off-track in Atlanta, Roger McDowell cannot fix them -- simple as that.

I know teams trade youth to bring in guys who can help push a team to the playoffs every year. I certainly do not mind that and was hoping the Braves would make a move. To me though, the asking price was way too high on Dempster, which is why 9 other teams said no thanks. There are a lot of baseball guys out there smarter than me who are absolutely shocked by what Wren gave up to get an aging, middle of the rotation starter.

I am holding out hope that Dempster vetoes or that we are not getting the full picture on the trade and the Cubs are throwing a significant prospect back Atlanta's way.

  • CrimsonKat, I really think the problem IS McDowell..Jurrjens, Hanson and Venters have lost velocity from last year. I realize they've all had problems staying healthy, but they should be back now. Tommy Hanson could throw 94-96 regularly 2 years ago, and now he can barely hit 91...

Uhh... An ERA of 2.11 is not a "middle of the rotation" starter. We got an ace, because we are trying to win the world series. When you are in a position to go for it, you go for it.

  • Just a sample of quotes on this trade from twitter:

Joe Sheehan (Sports Illustrated/NBC Sports): "There's no way gap between Randall Delgado and Ryan Dempster over 12 starts is worth trading Randall Delgado's next five years for."

Dave Weekley (Baseball Writer/Announcer): "Theo turned 9 weeks with Dempster into controlling Randall Delgado for 5 years, who COULD develop into top tier starter -- Advantage Cubs.

Scott Coleman (Editor of Braves' magazine Talking Chop): "If it's Randall Delgado and all the Braves get is Dempster, it will be Wren's worst trade in years."

    CrimsonKat

  • Dempster is not a true ace. While he has had an excellent season thus far, his career numbers suggest that he is a #2 or 3 starter with above average ERA and K/9 rates. Will he become the Braves best option? Probably so..

You don't become an ace by pitching well for half a season with a last place club.

Roy Halladay is an ace. Justin Verlander is an ace. Jered Weaver is an ace.

Ryan Dempster is not an ace.

Well if that's your philosophy, we should forget Dempster and see if we can get Lincecum.

  • Look, I hope the trade works out and Dempster is lights out for the rest of the year. But for me, this trade has a very high likelihood of ending up like the Teixeira deal where Atlanta is wishing in a few years they had the pieces they gave up to get a very short-term gain. In fact, the Teixeira trade might be more justifiable in that they controlled his rights for two seasons rather than a couple of months.

  • I know the board has echoed this sentiment in the thread, but does anyone think McDowell is responsible for the regression of our young pitching? The veterans like Hudson and crew have solid mechanics, and don't require fundamental coahing. Although Kimbrel is young, he's a freak, and coaching only goes so far. Does anyone think that Mike Minor would be twice the pitcher he is if he had any confidence in throwing a fastball? I know Beachy was incredible prior to his injury, but sabermetrics indicate that he was getting lucky a lot of the time, and shouldn't have performed quite as well.

Careful, Frank Wren might put our Gwinnett roster on the table to land a pitcher like Lincecum.
