    I don't believe it. I need data.

I don't want to cover the entire subject of statistics here with you, but increased accidents give rise to higher probabilities of fatal ones.

In fact, we could make a ban bet on it. It's kind of a dark proposition, but I have the house edge on this one. In 2 years, the number of deaths associated with texting and driving will have increased, normalized against current rates.

So, pretty much enjoy your last 2 years on BOL. Your own e-Mayan calendar just began its countdown.

Since the law went into effect in Tennessee nearly two years ago, I have not worked a SINGLE fatality text related in my jurisdiction and I cover state, local, US, and Interstate roadways. People still text the same way as before. The only difference, when they see me.....they stop. The arguement that it takes away from other needs is ridiculous. We don't go out and do saturations for texting. The mindset of some people is crazy, and not referring to you but others in this thread.

Just a quick stat, a person texting and driving has the same reaction time and ability as someone with a BAC between .08-.10. The difference is obviously it can be corrected when they stop texting. This law is directly aimed at teenagers. Texting and
driving is a much larger problem with ages 16-21

  • Stupidest legislation passed in Alabama in, what, 3 months? This will markedly increase the accidents and deaths in the state.

I bet the same simpletons that support this law are those that supported MADD - both will end up killing more people than they'll ever save. It's sad total morons drive legislation in this country and thus, through their abject incompetency, provide a less safe world for everyone.

Your personal experiences do not jive with the national studies in other states. Nor do they provide insight into anything but the stretches of road you happen to patrol at any given moment.

Statistically, I am right about higher probabilities in fatal accidents. That's theoretical, I know. But if you place river bets based on local, bounded mathematics and experiences, then buddy we need to play poker together. Bring lots of money.

I'm happy the empirical probabilities have resulted in your witnessing zero text related deaths. But, it's a statistical anomaly.

I have friends that tell me all the time about crazy coincidences they can't believe like seeing an old elementary school friend in Times Square on New Years Eve. It really befuddles me just how little people are aware of fundamental statistical concepts.

  • arguing about this is STUPID!

Anyone who doesn't know that texting and driving is stupid, dangerous, and moronic is not even worth arguing with. I only know it's past time to enforce that people stop doing what they shouldn't be ALLOWED to do all along---even using a phone period in a car is stupid. People never think they drive badly while doing it, but they always do.

As i've said before, I drive i459 daily back and forth to work, and there is hardly a day where some moron who has their phone out texting or dialing doesn't nearly hit me or another car near me. I'm tired of it. You all should be tired of it, if you care for your family's health, and I don't care if this law is unenforceable----IT'S A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, although I'd like to think that my fellow man would, of their own freewill, choose to do what is RIGHT on their own and not to endanger others with their own moronically dumb behavior(s)...but we all know people are too selfish for that---as obvious by reading this thread.

First it has nothing to do with patroling "at any given moment". As a crash reconstructionist, I am notified of all fatalities in our jurisdiction. On any given weekend, we have between 100,000 and 125,000 tourist enter our area. My personal experience at this point is more credible than anything you have brought to the conversation. I would love to see a nationally recognized study that proves your point.
Not only about increase, but the reason for increase. The fact that more people are added to the roads and cell phones being used more often may have something to do with it. If you have the information, then please provide it. I am always up for stats to use in training.
