  • I enjoy playing church league softball if my team won't stick me in the outfield, much better middle infielder and catcher. But our team always sucks, and I've always been a Charley Hustle kind of guy and down here if you slide into a base you just about start a brawl. I'm not trying to take a fielder off the base, it's just an instinct thing....even though i've never played baseball.

  • Played a good bit out here in California. Been back to Orlando for USSSA worlds etc. I am 37. I play one night of league ball now and local tournies for fun. The game has changed so much. Bats get hotter and balls get softer. Johnny "shaved bat" is only outnumbered by Johnny "rolled bat" but there are many Johnny "Rolled and shaved bats" out there too.

Guys have no clue how the game should be played overall and it is just not the game I saw my dad playing in the 80s when he was on a traveling "A&Majors" team.

If there isn't going to be barbecue and beer I don't play on a weekend haha.

Dead on! I actually find Co-Ed more fun now. It's more layed back and you got something nice to look at while you play.

There are adult slow pitch tournaments 50 weekends out of the year along the Gulf Coast. Many weekends there are multiple tournaments.

  • I played here in Gadsden's mens league for about the last 12 years except the last two. The main guys I have always played w/ either got busy with life or jobs got in the way?? We would also play in Boaz tournaments as well as s.ala a few times. LOVED it and for years I played both mens nights during the week and co-ed night for a season or two.

Amen Hit. Me & u are the same age & I think have talked ball before. Big difference between bats & balls these days. Which is leading to a lot of younger teams than in the old days. I bet this younger guy on our team. I could take out my old Demarini Double Wall & hit a 375 core ball over a 300ft. fence. It took me 7 swings but I did. He then says he could do it in less at bats. After 7 at bats. I think the furthest he hit one was maybe 250ft. He didn't have much to say after that. LOL

The bats and balls have been dumbed down considerably since the Miken Ultra days. Shaving today's 98 mph & 100 mph bats is merely an attempt to achieve performance similar to that of the "hot bat" era. Be that as it may, the vast majority of shaved bats still fall short of the performance of the super hot bats of yesteryear.

Rolling a bat is nothing more than a method of breaking in new, stiff, composite bat. Composite bats will eventually break in with enough hits, but that takes time. Rolling simply short cuts the process. Rolling a bat is completely legitimate in my view. I definitely roll all of my new bats before they come out of the wrappers.

Even with all of the shaving and rolling shenanigans, the softball powers that be have succeeded in slowing the ball down. I don't see nearly the home runs being hit in today's game compared to just a few years ago. Personally I've gone from being a legitimate home run hitting threat to a place hitter. I use to average around one home run a game. Now I might hit one every 5th or 6th game. I attribute it more to the 40 core balls than the bats, but it is a function of both.
