OT - Steroid use in HS football

  • Shane8773 said...

when these kids use the steriods to get the effect they desire then they are abusing them. Just like alcohol, when you get drunk its because youve had too much. the amount a doctor says you should have is not gonna make a person drunk. i dont understand why people cant see this. steriods are a good thing for people who need them and are using them under the care of a doctor, but how many of these kids "juicing" in high school are getting their steroids from a doctor and using very small amounts? people can try and justify it all they want but if youre getting the results they desire youre using too much.

    Good post.

I never argued the problems of abuse. I was stating that steroids themselves aren't the problem. The abuse is. Noone is trying to justify anything, but your statements were that many years of steroid use led to their downfall and that steroids were catastophic. I was just calling you out on your blanket statements and you using your medical background to justify them. Is it the steroids that are catastophic or the abuse of them? You now state that using them under a doctors care is fine. We are stating the same thing. Steroids can be good if used properly.

i think you have me mistaken for another poster. but to your point, these threads are never started to discuss the risks and benefits of using steroids in a clinical setting. you know that this thread is for one purpose only and that is to discuss the use and abuse of steroids for the purpose of gaining muscle mass and when used like that it is ALWAYS abuse, plane and simple. not flaming you, just explaining that you DO NOT get the results these kids desire when you use a course of steroids as prescribed by a physician. i dont think anyone in this thread is gonna argue that ALL steroid use is bad, but when one of these threads is started you know what type of use is being discussed, yet there is always one person in each of them thats gonna come to the defense of steroids.

  • Steroids like any perscrition drug are beneficial when used in the prescribed method. When steroids were "outlawed" the FDA did not want or vote for them to be illegal. In fact they tried to convince them not ot. That was a straight up government move. I agree that kids that are still growing naturally should not take roids because of the potential danger and risk of injury to their joints, ligaments and tendons.

  • I and many friends have taken small dosages (1cc/week) of test my whole life. Test is a great form of youthfulness when used properly. The media perception of many steroids is way out of whack because they don't have a clue because they have never done anything. They just listen to the abusers and the doctors that have treated these rogue abusers and throw everyone in the same category.

You are right, I did confuse you with another poster.

You can't get the desired results from steroids in a clinical setting. These blanket statements you & others make are truly false. You can't honestly say that it wouldn't have b/c it has never to my knowledge been tested ?
As I stated earlier, I have never taken steroids, but @ 17 yrs old, I could squat over 450 pounds & ran a 4.65 forty. You honestly think that if a doctor had prescribed me steroids that I couldn't have lifted more and ran faster? You talk about gettting the desired results are abuse. Is taking steroids to get an erection abuse?

BTW this thread wasn't started to discuss steroid abuse by teenagers looking for muscle gains. It was started to discuss whether colleges shy away from those that are obviously on steroids. But inevitably some people have to start talking about how steroids are terrible and cause catastophic damage.

You and i both know we arent talking about erectile dysfunction here, and to be honest its just a way of twisting around what im saying. Also, lets not turn this into an online weight lifting contest lol. Any benefit you would have gained to your athletic ability and overall performance from a prescription course of steroids at that point in your life would have been minimal. You can argue all you want, but there are people out there that are a lot smarter than you and i who get paid a lot of money to do research on these things, and it all shows that when kids are using steroids the way the OP is describing theyre abusing them and this same research also shows that later in life they have big problems from it. Major effects of steroid abuse can include liver damage; jaundice; fluid retention; high blood pressure; increases in "bad" cholesterol. Also, males risk shrinking of the testicles, baldness, breast development, and infertility. Females risk growth of facial hair, menstrual changes, male-pattern baldness, and deepened voice. Teens risk permanently stunted height, accelerated puberty changes, and severe acne. All users, but particularly those who inject the drug, risk infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis.

You are in the medical field and see how catastrophic they are. I would suggest you are seeing the people that abused them. For every person you say they are catastrophic for, 10 people can be shown to you where they weren't. Anything and I mean anything can be bad and catastrophic to you if they are abused. Aspirin, Sugar, Water, etc.... I think you have heard the phrase "Too much of a good thing can be bad for you." I'm sure you see the damage alcohol does to people as well. Yet Many doctors will tell you that having a glass of wine, or a beer every day is good for a person. Doctors prescribe testosterone everyday. So is it the alcohol, steroids, etc... that are the problem or is it the abuse of them?

this guy gets it......yes and of course teens going through puberty shouldnt take it but healthy adult males is a diff story

  • all my point was that when used responsibly by a grown man there is just no hard evidence that back up claims that these are inherently dangerous.......its just not true what the general media would have you believe.......so may people think lyle azado died of directly because of his steroid use just bc he said that in an interview once, hes own doctor said there was no link between them and his sickness
