Off Topic - Tiger at the Masters

  • Am I the only one upset because the announcers, and even the Masters committee, have not been more critical of Tiger's childish display yesterday to include cursing every bad shot, throwing and kicking his club, etc.? To his credit, Faldo did make a comment about Tiger "losing it", but otherwise little was said.

I just think it is ridiculous that he acts that way and people say well he just has high standards, or he just wants to win so bad, etc. Well, I think every guy there wants to win and has some high standards and they do not act that way. Mickelson took his medicine like a man after his first round triple bogey at 10. McElroy took his medicine like a man last year after his fiasco at number 10.

To me it is ironic that a Masters committee bans Gary McCord due to a "bikini wax" comment referring to the speed of the greens as unbecoming golf decorum, but has not publicly criticized Tiger's lack of golf decorum on hole number 16.

Just my thoughts. I realize he has a lot of people who love to watch him and will defend him no matter what, but I despise his actions. I would hate to see any of our athletes act that way. I doubt Coach Saban would allow it.

  • What I am critical of is TV crews trying to keep Woods in tournaments even when he's out of it. Just look at how many times the camera is on Woods long after he is well out of contention.

He's the greateat player of his generation and one of the two greatest players of all time. People are interested in what he's doing, regardless of whether he's in contention.

If you ran those networks and saw the numbers you'd do the exact same thing. They're not in the business of equal coverage, they're in the business of drawing as many eye balls to tv sets as possible.

  • Everybody loves Fred Couples, myself included, but I recall a few years ago hearing him drop "GD" & "F" bombs after a couple of bunker shots.
It happens. I don't necessarily like it, but it happens. If you just don't like Tiger, say you don't like him, but don't act like he's the only golfer who gets mad.

That's all well and good if, as the OP pointed out, you have announcers who don't treat him with kid gloves and don't pull any punches.

You mean, sort of like the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox dominating ESPN Sunday Night Baseball? Sure, I understand it. Doesn't mean that I have to like it, any more than I like seeing the Yankees or Red Sox on Sunday nights an inordinate amount of times.

I don't like him as a person. I respect his golf ability as one of the top 3 or 4 players of all time, but I do not like or respect how he conducts himself as a person. Yes, other players have let an F bomb or two slip out. When is the last time you saw a professional, especially in a major, throw down his club and kick in 15 yards or so? Personally, I do not want to see professional golf go the way of tennis. We do not need John McEnroe behavior on the golf course. If If you can give me examples of other players throwing and/or kicking their golf clubs, then I stand corrected.

so Mickleson does not have high standards and want to win badly? funny, I thought McElroy had pretty high standards and wanted to win. I did not realize Tiger was the exception in this regard.

  • I have never cared squat about golf and do not keep up with it. I used to get tired of hearing all the Tigermania stuff until I read his speech at the Lincoln Memorial during the inauguration of Chairman Obama.:

" I grew up in a military family -- and my role models in life were my Mom and Dad, Lt. Colonel Earl Woods.

My dad was a Special Forces operator and many nights friends would visit our home. They represented every branch of service, and every rank. In my Dad, and in those guests, I saw first hand the dedication and commitment of those who serve. They come from every walk of life. From every part of our country. Time and again, across generations, they have defended our safety in the dark of night and far from home.

Each day -- and particularly on this historic day -- we honor the men and women in uniform who serve our country and protect our freedom. They travel to the dangerous corners of the world, and we must remember that for every person who is in uniform, there are families who wait for them to come home safely.

I am honored that the military is such an important part, not just of my personal life, but of my professional life as well. The golf tournament we do each year here in Washington is a testament to those unsung heroes. I am the son of a man who dedicated his life to his country, family and the military, and I am a better person for it.

In the summer of 1864, Abraham Lincoln, the man whose memorial we stand, spoke to the 164th Ohio Regiment and said:

"I am greatly obliged to you, and to all who have come forward at the call of their country."

Just as they have stood tall for our country -- we must always stand by and support the men and women in uniform and their families.

Thank you, and it is now my pleasure to introduce the U.S. Naval Glee Club."

It probably was not what those who invited him expected to hear. twocents

I agree that that kind of stuff rarely happens on the PGA tour, but it happens all the time on the European tour. Poulter and sergio have thrown some tantrums that make Tiger's behavior look pretty mild.

  • Tiger is the best. You either have to love him or hate him. As far as him kicking a club what is the differerence in that emotion and Saban showing some emotion???? NONE. Both have a passion to win. I like seeing it from BOTH.

Not sure if you meant this as something you think we should feel differently about or Tiger or as a joke. Either way I doubt Tiger wrote that and even if he did...if he believes what he said he sure doesn't exemplify it and if he thinks he does...what a joke.

Sorry if I misunderstood your intentions with the post.

  • Tom Watson hasn't been shy about calling him out on it. It's totally unprofessional and he's letting it show that the pressure he put on himself to reach 19 is getting to him. Face it in his mind his entire career and life is a failure if he doesn't win 19.

Yep, pretty much the same, and I don't like it much either. I do agree about the kid gloves treatment......I'm not sure what these guys think they stand to lose by being critical. Tiger is already reclusive and allows them minimal access to begin with.

  • thishas always gone on with Tiger, but the media has always covered it up.
He gets a pass either because of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
or because the old race card will be pulled and anyone who
critiizes him will be branded a racist. Wonder what th overage
would be if some redneck bubba pulled the same shenanigans.

I think he acts like a jerk a lot of the time and you are correct in your analysis of his actions off the course. The speech however is not a joke. It's on the PGA website.
