Ok, so let me be a jerk and say ...

  • I might as well say what's on my mind. So here goes...

I love the message boards and I love debating and discussing Alabama and college sports with you guys. Everybody knows I make my living doing this and I am so blessed to have this opportunity and so thankful that you guys support BOL.

But, come on BOLers?!?! I have read message after message with posters adamantly stating their position on these assistants and why some should be considered and why others have NO chance of being considered and it is utterly vile to mention their names.

Come on... With all due respect. These are business hires. I've run a business for more than 15 years and at one time oversaw 300+ employees. If a group of people banded together to tell me who I should hire for my "executive team" I would literally throw up in my mouth. Saban is the CEO of the Alabama football team. He is responsible for all staff hires. He knows what he wants to do with the program and his track record is as good as it gets.

And I can tell you for a fact that many of you are totally misguided on how Saban feels about some previous staffers. I'm seeing this with more than a few of the names mentioned and it is just wrong.

It is one thing for us to discuss the merits of all the candidates and whom we believe would be most beneficial to the program, but come on with all of the matter of fact posts that "candidate X," or "candidate Y" would never be considered because of past issues is getting out of hand. Some of you guys are taking coaches that could/will be legitimate candidates to the woodshed with few facts in hand.

You can do what you want, but unless you have a direct line with Saban, I would be careful ripping into any current assistant coaches previously or currently linked to Alabama.

    Just sayin ...

  • Couldn't agree more, Lucky. I suppose I fell victim to some of the "hearsay" from years past RE: Lance Thompson, but I am not naive enough to discount the track record and reputation that you and your staff have brought (to me) the last 6 years or so.

I hate that, on a day full of news like today, you have to spend time teaching the children of the board about the real world. Keep up the good work, sir.

  • Yeah! Take that knuckleheads. These guys are doing what they feel is best for their families and career desires. It may absolutely suck to lose some coaches, but it will happen sooner or later especially if Alabama continues to win. If that happens, we all need to look at the one constant...CNS. Secondly, no one ever really knows the whole story of something that may happen between a boss and employee...even the wife of said employee may only know so much. I personally believe that CNS knows what he's doing.

All that being said, I still don't want coach Sal to leave....because Jack Bauer said so.

He will get another good coach, but I wouldn't expect him to hire someone better than Sal. He is about as good as it gets.

    yeah you are probably right.

but i would have enough sense to steer clear of any of these crazy message boards if i was them. though BOL is by far the best run and has the best posters.

  • Not being a jerk at all. Thanks for the post, Shannon. I spend half the time I'm on BOL, which is
about 8 hours a day, just shaking my head at some of the moronic posts and responses from the

  • Agreed. I want who Saban wants because he is better at coaching football than I am. I say that although I've never really tried it...I could be an outstanding coach for all I know so maybe he should hire me...but the point is he has proven himself quite capable of making these decisions on his own. A Schottenheimer hire for OC wouldn't "wow" me but again, I trust Saban.

As for Thompson, I'd love to have him back. He's a great recruiter and a solid coach. He's familiar with what we do and did a good job for us before bailing. That was his business decision, just like this new hire would be...nothing personal involved.
