  • I wasn't a big Chris Stewart fan, especially when he started calling basketball games, but he's grown on me with time. Eli is all I've ever known, so I'm admittedly biased, but like another poster said, I don't ever have a problem picturing the game when I'm listening to him.

Eli is simply not good at describing the game, period. If you watch the game on TV, mute the TV, and turn on Eli you will be astounded at just how poor he is at describing the action.

He does have a unique voice and has been the guy for a long time, so I understand the sentiment of many that he is great. I would prefer somebody more skilled in calling the game myself, but to each his own.

Exactly, and if you ever have to listen without being able to watch the game, you won't be able to tell if it's the 3rd play of the game or the last or who is winning. Stabler used to chime in with the time even though it's Eli's job. EG also tends to sound excited about a "run up the middle" or "around the left", that makes you think it's a big play until he ends the sentence with "for a gain of two."

Did anyone notice that Eli used the phrase "through a tunnel of humanity"? For those of you calling for his retirement, I suggest we wait to see if broadcasting is like fine wine in that being old might cause more nuggets of awesomeness like "tunnel of humanity" to be used more often.

    On record:

Eli is Good. Shouldn't replace. Savage is good. Shouldn't replace. Find something worth worrying about if you think otherwise. Other topics that fall into this same category: field conditions, stadium food, stadium sound system, Dixie Land Delight, fat people stadium seating, and why Taco Casa's windows get so foggy at night.

No radio person can come close to conveying what they TV or being there can. If you can't see the game, it's probably your fault. If you want to listen to a game and it's Eli calling it, you're in for a treat because he is the greatest voice in radio.

  • Eli Gold is to BAMA football as Keith Jackson is to college football. Eli Gold is probabaly the most recognized voice to BAMA Football as any other BAMA football broadcaster in the state history of broadcasting. He is great, nationally recognized, and well respected by many in the profession.

I was actually backpacking this weekend, and listened to the entire game. Just me, but I have never had a problem having a picture of the game in my head with him narrating. And to the OP, that call made me spit my bourbon all over the fire. I am astounded as to how good of a job he does, but maybe thats because Eli is all i know. Just watched the TR interview on ESPN, and they played a clip of Eli on Trents run vs Ole Miss, and he said,"That was shake and bake, extra crispy folks!" Quotes like that are why I love Eli.

i've been doing that for years and totally disagree. eli's job is play-by-play. he is supremely more exciting to listen to than compared to anybody on tv. i rarely find myself uninformed. i DO think we need a better color guy. but on radio when the play-by-play guy has to describe so much, there's not as much time for color commentary like on tv. a tv guy can let the picture speak a lot of times, so there's more time for a guy like gary danielson to break down a play. but you have your opinion and that's fine. i respect it.

  • I luv chris stewert and all but come on, Eli is a legend and I think he does an incredible job. I can't imagine listening to a Bama game w/out hearing Eli's distinct voice. He's such a professional. I luv how descriptive he is of what's going on during the game. Just listen to some other teams(ex.*u) announcers and you'll see how good he is. Can't think of the other guys name but he does great job as well. Phil?
I do luv listening to chris stewert do the basketball games. I love how excited he gets. U can tell he really luvs the Crimson Tide and I really like that about him. I have no complaints bout any of our broadcast guys. Just my opinion though

  • I love Phil Savage but I really miss the days of Eli Gold and Kenny Stabler. Stabler was a great color man who brought a kind of swagger to the position. He and Eli worked well together and both of them had a lot of fun in that booth. You could tell.

  • I've been listening to Eli since I was very young, and I've never once had an issue picture what was actually happening. I'm not sure what some people expect from a radio broadcast? It's a live event, and the play-by-play guy is highly reliant on his producer, stats guy and spotter to be on top of their game for the entire broadcast. It's a big circle of trust. If the stat guy isn't quick enough with numbers, or if the spotter points to the wrong guy on the call sheet, or if the producer doesn't give him cues, then the play by play guy will makes mistakes.

I mean, to each their own, but if you can honestly think of a better play-by-play guy in college football then be my guest. The only guy I can think of in his league is Gene Deckerhoff for Florida State and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

For some of the criticisms on Eli, it seems that people want a perfect story of each and every play to occur within the 4-10 seconds that the play actually occurs, while others are offended by any shred of objectivity in the booth.

Also remember, it's a form of MASS media. Meaning that it's an enormously large audience, so a happy medium has to be reached so even the casual fan can enjoy the game. If he were to get into some hyper-complicated breakdown of what's going on, it would be infinitely more confusing on air than giving too general of a description.

Again, good luck finding someone better or more of a professional than Eli.

This is the problem. You don't know anything else therefore Eli is great to you. He is Alabama football to you. But, there is NOTHING about that nasally, Brooklyn twang that says SOUTHERN football. As for his ability to call the game so that one can follow it, when is the last time you've listened to Eli's broadcast WITHOUT watching it simultaneously? You think he's doing a solid job simply because you're viewing what happens. You know down and distance b/c you see it. You know the score b/c you see it. You know whether a guy makes a first down b/c you see it. If a player runs for a first down, it typically takes 10 seconds for Eli to make you aware of this fact.

I don't want a professional. I want someone who BLEEDS crimson and would rather die than lose a football game. Chris Stewart is that man. The guy loves Alabama like it was his mama. And, I'm never lost when I listen to the much faster paced basketball games. He's also very good at slowing the pace down and filling time as in his baseball broadcasts. The criticism I've ever heard of C Stew is that he has a bad radio voice. Fortunately, he wins that battle with Eli tenfold. Eli's voice sucks.
