On the Chip Kelly hire....

  • I know the first reaction is the Bucs must be insane......but maybe not.

Consider this. If you're Tampa Bay, you already know you aren't a very attractive destination for top level free agents. So if you decide your organization has a glass ceiling given the way the game has changed, what do you do?

How about bringing in a head coach to run an offense completely opposite to what other teams run. How does this work philosophically? I think you take an Oakland A's approach to football........find guys that are C's and D'S talent wise in a traditional offense that you can turn into B's and A's in your system. Financially this frees up a TON of money that you can then pour into your defense and defensive staff where you'll be able to overpay to get top free agents on that side of the ball.

The next question is how would Kelly's offense ever have a prayer in the NFL? Well, if they fully commit to a plan like this then I think they believe their overall lack of elite skill can be overcome by running a system that's a nightmare to prep for given only a week. This is where the financial aspect comes into play again because being able to afford the pieces necessary to build a dominant defense means your offense won't need to light up the score board.

It's very progressive and it could crash and burn, but it could also be revolutionary. If I was a Bucs fan though, I'd buy into this over the alternative which is being a .500 team with the 4th best QB in your own division for the foreseeable future. Thoughts?

  • The spread will work for about 5 minutes in the NFL. Tim Tebow was one of the best spread option guys in recent history of college football, and he hasn't been able to make it to work in the NFL.

Don't think they will be able to do any better even with RG3.

Denver's roster isn't built to run it........so judgment can't be cast there yet.

  • I doubt you'll see the same offense, but he will probably work in his tempo, which will be interesting.

  • I live inTampa and I was hoping for Jeff Fischer or another NFL coach. However, we do need someone to help Josh Freeman who seemed to go backwards this year. I just hope he brings in a strong staff because the Bucs were awful at the end of the year.

  • Its hard to sustain drives with that offense, especially when the talent/speed gap is close.

  • The hire wreaks of desperation.

This is the biggest issue with the scenario I presented. Even with your offense in place, 3 and outs are still going to happen at a much higher rate than in the Pac12.

  • I live in FL so I usually have to watch TB Sundays. They have been awful for years. Gruden was fired but guess what -- tB was still awful. I can't see Clhp Kelly doing that much better.

No way in hell he gets anyone with over a 5 year tenure in the league to run that tempo.

I'm not saying it will work, but the reason Tebow isn't lighting up the league is because he isn't a great thrower of the football. If you put a qb in that offense that can throw and run when needed it may have a fighting chance.

  • Why not? The run-and-shoot got more than a shot in the NFL. I'm curious to see if he can make it work at that level.

  • It's more about the pace than anything else IMO.

Look at how well the fast-paced, no-huddle offense works when you have a good, smart QB running it - one of the teams in the SuperBowl. New England and New Orleans are two of the best at running no-huddle offenses and they obviously work really well in the NFL. If Kelley can get a good QB and get his teams used to running it well, no reason it can't be successful IMO.

  • Don't care what kinda elite D talent you bring in. You only dress 53 players on Sunday. That means you got roughly 26 defensive players on the sideline. Not a lot of players when you ask your D to play 65+ snaps a game.

  • I actually agree with jawa's points and mentioned this on another board. Consider a draft where Tampa can use Rounds 1-3 every year to bulk up the defense. Keep in mind that a back like Darren Sproles went in the Fourth Round. Then use Rounds 4-7 to get the undervalued spread players for your offensive system. Imagine Rounds 4 through 7 for Tampa Bay going like this a year ago -- two potential draft plans:

Round 4: QB Colin Kaepernick (Nevada)
Round 5: RB Jacquizz Rodgers (Oregon State)
Round 6: OL Jason Kelce (Cincinnati)
Round 7: WR Demarco Sampson (San Diego State)

    OR

Round 4: RB Kendall Hunter (Oklahoma State)
Round 5: TE DJ Williams (Arkansas)
Round 6: QB Tyrod Taylor (Virginia Tech)
Round 7: OL Lee Ziemba (Auburn)

Exactly.......and with the kind of free agents you'd target on offense, you'd be dealing with guys who don't have a plethora of options on the table and therefore would be more than willing to buy in to your system in exchange for a shot to either play or stay in the NFL.

In regard to the roster/depth issue on defense.......I'm not arguing that. I never said this was a perfect system, of course there are a ton of potential flaws.

  • Not saying it's exactly the same, but Spurrier hit a brick wall week in and week out.

  • Maybe that's why D. Thomas declared for the nfl, maybe he knew already.

Thats just the very thing IMO. There is no NFL team built to run that kinda offense. And a GM or owner will never invest that money to do it either. Its a 52 man roster is why I think this.
