On the Chip Kelly hire....

  • Jawa3hc said...

I know the first reaction is the Bucs must be insane......but maybe not.

Consider this. If you're Tampa Bay, you already know you aren't a very attractive destination for top level free agents. So if you decide your organization has a glass ceiling given the way the game has changed, what do you do?

How about bringing in a head coach to run an offense completely opposite to what other teams run. How does this work philosophically? I think you take an Oakland A's approach to football........find guys that are C's and D'S talent wise in a traditional offense that you can turn into B's and A's in your system. Financially this frees up a TON of money that you can then pour into your defense and defensive staff where you'll be able to overpay to get top free agents on that side of the ball.

The next question is how would Kelly's offense ever have a prayer in the NFL? Well, if they fully commit to a plan like this then I think they believe their overall lack of elite skill can be overcome by running a system that's a nightmare to prep for given only a week. This is where the financial aspect comes into play again because being able to afford the pieces necessary to build a dominant defense means your offense won't need to light up the score board.

It's very progressive and it could crash and burn, but it could also be revolutionary. If I was a Bucs fan though, I'd buy into this over the alternative which is being a .500 team with the 4th best QB in your own division for the foreseeable future. Thoughts?

They have a salary cap in the NFL. It may not be an attractive choice, but this isnt moneyball in my opinion.

The spread will work for about 5 minutes in the NFL. Tim Tebow was one of the best spread option guys in recent history of college football, and he hasn't been able to make it to work in the NFL.

Don't think they will be able to do any better even with RG3.

With the way QBs and WRs are being protected while RBs are not in the rulebook I think we'll see a lot more passing a la the Saints.

  • My thoughts are it will be a colossal failure if true. The salary cap is in place to prevent teams from being dominant based on talent alone. So the whole fnancial aspect makes zero sense to me, if he runs that spread option offense they will get crushed badly. There is only one guy in the NFL that could make that offense work and his name is cam newton. Others either wouldn't have the dual threat ability or would get injured.

Maybe that's why D. Thomas declared for the nfl, maybe he knew already.

Of course he knew, and he had a deadline to meet. Expect to see him in TB, too.

Yes they have a salary cap, but they dont have rules against what percentage of your payroll can be spent on defense/offense. If you can build an offense that can be successful while only using 30% payroll it leaves 70% to spend on D while other franchises are closer to 50/50 or MAYBE 40/60.

I'm only suggesting a moneyball type approach in building the offense.

Why not? The run-and-shoot got more than a shot in the NFL. I'm curious to see if he can make it work at that level.

Me too. Although I still believe it comes down to the players. Jawa, I don't think the A's looked for C and D players. They looked for players that produced results such as on base %, runs, hits with men in scoring position to draft instead of looking for kids with elite projectable tools.
