No. Expecting their defense to suck, since it consistently has sucked under chizik, is not as unrealistic as expecting them to lean on a Jake Holland-led defense, with absolute garbage in the secondary, waiting for Kiehl Frazier to learn to throw a pass, or, Heaven forfend, expecting to "work" Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Are you related to Van Gorder? I can't see any other reason you (and I presume you are an Alabama fan) would take such offense at my statement about the new defensive coordinator at barn.

No and I did not say that allbarn's D was going to be stout. All I was pointing out was the tendancy for some Bama fans to act like all barn coaches suck. Van Gorder carried Richt like John Chavis carried Phats and is now carrying Lester. I know good coaching when I see it and Van Gorder is good so I expect their defense to be better than the sieve they were last year. I hope they lose every game and no I am not related to Van Gorder.

I'd say Van Gorder is a serviceable DC. He is definitely a step up from Roof (but who isn't?). His defenses at UGA were good, but none would be confused with recent Bama and LSU defenses. Saban put 30 on him in the SEC championship in 2003, which statistically was his best year. As other have pointed out, he had more talent at UGA than he currently has at MooU.
I wouldn't look for them to significantly improve on defense. He will teach them how to tackle which will improve their defensive standings some since they were atrocious tacklers last year, but they will still be physically inferior to a lot of the SEC teams they face. Grantham at UGA is better than Van Gorder and the UGA fans will tell you this. He is not in the same league as Chavis and I think Chavis is just slightly above average as a DC.

Dirty little secret is that the defensive "talent" they have recruited in recent years is fairly uniformly overrated and underdeveloped. I think it was Saban who said something to the effect of "I'm not worth shit without players." Van Trejo is no Saban.

Lots of shitty coaches have coached in the NFL. I'd be more impress if another NFL franchise had been interested in Van Trejo. He was on the verge of getting the ax in Atlanta.
