Our Secondary..

  • This is not a blow on our secondary at all, but I think everyone agrees that the secondary has been the weakness on our team most of the year (with most of the trouble being with belue and our safeties covering). Well here is the star rating of our normal 5 who play in the nickel.

Millner - 5 star and easily a Superstar
HA HA - 5 star and reminds be a lot of Ed Reed
Lester - 3 star/borderline 4 star (has been forced to cover one on one a lot more and has been exposed a little and is missing a lot of tackles)
Vinnie - 3 star (great heart but flat out cant cover one on one)
Belue - 3 star (looks great at times but other times looks completely lost)

I am not one for just looking at highschool rankings because I think Coach Saban gets the best out of his players. but we just dont have the superstar talent across the board like we have had the last 3 years or so. Again not a bash on our players because they have played their hearts out but from a pure talent standpoint across the board I think this is our weakest area and why we see it struggle at times.

The secondary isn't the weakness. Not having a top end edge rusher is the problem. We get minimal pass rush.

If our defense had a Mingo or Clowney, our defense would basically be thought of as good as last year.

Belue and Sunseri are liabilities though.

I think it is a circular argument here. Is our secondary weak because the lack of pass rush, or is our pass rush weak because our secondary has a tough time covering receivers? I think it is a little bit of both. In the LSU game, I can't tell you how many times our D-Linemen were in Mettenberger's face, but every single time he released the ball so fast that we weren't able to get there in time. Other plays we just couldn't cover. Sometimes they were asked to cover guys for a longer time than they should, but a lot of plays they were about 10 yards off the receiver. This has happened in every game since then.

  • A good pass rush will make up for some problems in any secondary.

  • Guys really most of the over all athleticism on the team is in the sophomore and freshman classes. Remember Saban saying in the preseason "We may get beaten but it won't be because of our minds not being right"

To me that smells of "this is an experienced starting group but not world beaters"

Of course most teams in America and even our own conference would kill to have the talent we have.

I saw Mingo was mentioned. Do you guys think that LSU has a better pass rush than us?

If so do you think the reason that we have much more sacks and QB hurries is because we blitz more than Chavis?

Yea that doesn't make sense, hmmm, I wonder why...

  • Belue is better than your rating. I think he's done a good job in his first year at Bama. He's improving with every game.

I think Lester is having an off-year, myself. His coverage has been very loose, in my view.

This'll be unpopular, but I think DePriest is a tremendous drop-off from Hightower and has been a liability for us this year - certainly against Georgia.
