Overrated/Underrated Bama Draft Hopefuls

  • So, Mandel has decided that Vlachos is the most underrated and that Dre is the most overrated draft hopefuls at their respective positions. I find it a little hard to disagree. Vlachos is a great center even though he doesn't have the height. I think people are sleeping on him and someone will get a steal. I also agree on Dre. He's one of the best I've ever seen when he's on but he's got a little too much of the risk/reward going on for me to really think he's worth a first round pick. I'd prefer someone with a little lower ceiling but with less risk.

What are your opinions on the other guys? Who do you think is overrated and underrated?

Trent is just a badass. He can't be overrated no matter where he goes.

Upshaw is the same. He can't go high enough to be overrated and is getting a ton of hype. He's probably rated about right but maybe slightly underrated.

Barron is pretty badly overrated IMO. Again, tons of upside and a hard hitter but he's all or nothing. I want consistency from my safeties.

Hightower is probably the most underrated player in the draft. He is smart and physical. He's a freak at his position. Someone is going to be happy with him no matter where he ends up going.

Sports Illustrated calls Tide's Kirkpatrick overrated, Vlachos underrated

One member of the Alabama Crimson Tide's group of NFL Draft hopefuls received some major praise from Sports Illustrated's Stewart Mandel on Wednesday while another was taken down a peg by the college football writer.

I like Menzie a lot. There will be several steals from Bama in the back half of this draft. It's hard to guess which ones but anyone who has spent 3-5 years playing in Saban's secondary would be a good place to start.

  • "Barron is pretty badly overrated IMO." Wow, this is one of the more foolish statements I have seen leading up to the draft, IMO. And I'm not sure many people on this board, at the U of A, or in the NFL would even come close to agreeing with you. Are you basing your "all or nothing" on one or two plays throughout his entire career? Like when he couldnt lift his arm and got beat in the barn game in 2010? Barron being "all or nothing", IMO, couldnt be farther from the truth. I could see where you were going with Dre. He has gotten beat quite a few times in his career. I still think Dre is a great player, though. Your statement about Barron doesnt make much sense to me. Unless you can explain your reasoning...

It's more than a few plays. Getting burned by the barn had nothing to do with his torn pec. He was out of position and wasn't close to making that play even with healthy Gadget arms. His coverage skills do not justify a first round pick. I'm 100% certain if that.

what play were you watching? He was in perfect position...News flash, he's a safety..He wasnt covering anyone on the play he was trying to help a DB who was beaten..He plays safety because his coverage skills are not as good as a DB's...If youre grading a safety based on coverage skill, thats flawed logic...

Wow. This is amazing. You need to get on the phone with nearly half of the NFL teams that are wanting to draft him in the first round. I cant believe you are not an NFL GM yet. You have still yet to prove you point, by the way. I want to know where all these plays are that you are talking about.

The only deep ball I can recall last year was the one where Dre K was beaten in the swamp. He was on an Island. I dont think this guy understands the difference between a safety and a CB. If Barron is ever in the picture on a deep ball its because he's trying to cover someone else's azz..

Y'all are talking about two different plays. I don't know what the coverage was on AU's 1st TD but Cam faked a run then passed. The way I saw it, Barron bit on the fake and Blake got past him. Barron actually tore his pec trying to knock the ball away when Blake bobbled it. Again though, not sure of the coverage but from my perspective it looked like that one was on Barron.

The second one was not Barron's fault. He was in perfect position to make a pick but couldn't lift his arm which resulted in an awkward spin/miss. He shouldn't have even been out there but we needed him and he played hurt for us.

As for the draft, I think Barron is an elite talent and not at all overrated. I understand your thoughts on Dre and kind of agree. I actually liked Menzie more and think he's underrated. I think if Chapman falls to the 4th then whoever gets him is getting a steal. Most importantly, I love all our guys and hope all become multiple time Pro-Bowlers.

I agree on Dre. I wouldn't pick him in the first round. He has his moments, but he's too much style over substance at this point for me. He has the ability, but he seems to often be more intrested in how he looks than how he's playing.

Totally disagree on Barron. Barron is a freaking ballplayer. He's smart and athletic. I doubt you will find any safety who really puts in work in the box like Barron does who hasn't been burned at times. He's a playmaker and brings a physical presence. He is without a doubt worthy of a first round pick, IMO.

Actually, I do understand the difference and I have much more experience playing in the secondary than you do. Have you bothered to watch the NFL recently? If so, you'd understand that coverage skills are more important than ever for safeties. This isn't a run first game anymore and it hasn't been for a while. Keep up with the changes in the sport.
