PENN STATE........DEATH PENALTY...thoughts?

  • If the crimes at PS are PROVEN in a court of law, I say
    DEATH PENALTY!!!!
Sure the current players had nothing to do with it, yada yada, but there is no way to "undo" this kind of damage.
The clear message should be absolute intolerence. Any punishment less than the Death Penalty is another enabler. JMHO

  • Will not happen. NCAA is set up to deal with other issues. Their punishment will come in other ways.

  • I don't think the players and student body should pay the price of what a few did. Every person who was part of the coverup should be prosecuted. Penn State's reputation is already tarnished because of them. I don't think punishing the school, community and state is fair.

I am still shocked that Joe Paterno wasn't the kind of man I thought he was. I can't imagine looking the other way and protecting that monster. Joe Pa had responsibilty for more children being abused. He could've stopped it. But his own selfish motives were more important. It's unimaginable.

The clear message is absolute intolerance anyways. It is not he NCAA's job to make that point. It is the laws.

The guys that were a part of the coverup should go to trial just like those people that are accomplices in murder.

What the NCAA does to Penn State would have no affect on anyone that was a part of that tragedy. It would only penalize their fans and players that had absolutely nothing to do with it. I say let the law prosecute those that covered it up.

  • Honestly, I don't want the NCAA anywhere near this issue. If the NCAA acts on this, it will open up a brand new door of things for the NCAA to 'rule' on and that will in the long run be very bad for college athletics. The NCAA is incapable of "policing" the things they are watching over now. If they do some type of ruling on this issue with Penn State it will setup a precedent that I don't think anyone would want. Especially considering how the NCAA picks and chooses which issues to look into and which issues to let float on by with no worries.

  • Definitely don't think the death penalty is appropriate. It misunderstands the severe collateral consequences. Central Pennsylvania is already one of the more economically depressed places in the country. Take away football and they'll literally have nothing left. The last thing this country needs is to destroy a revenue generator. The last thing we need is another Detroit.

  • I don't see the death penalty but the victims will have one helluva a law suit against the school. I mean they should end up owning it after they get through. These were the people that ran the institution that had absolute disregard for their welfare and are just as culpable as the sick person that did it. I hate large lawsuits but I would agree on a BIG one for this situation.

  • Again, I feel like I'm beating the dead horse to death, but here goes...

It wasn't a football issue. To say that it was a football issue cheapens the whole sordid affair. Yes, it involved the football program, but it was far, far more than a football issue.

The central issue was the very governance of the university at the very highest levels, from the board of trustees and the president on down. The leadership at Penn State maintained a school climate and culture where this tragedy was allowed to flourish. Every single member of the board of trustees should be replaced.

There was absolutely no proper institutional control. The examples are numerous. Paterno kicking the president and AD off his porch when they tried to get him to resign. The president, VP, and AD changing their minds about reporting Sandusky to authorities after conversations with Paterno. The obscene buyout given to Paterno apparently without the knowledge or approval of the full board of trustees. The failure of the school administration to ensure that their campus was a safe environment for visiting children. The complete lack of integrity on the part of every individual involved in this mess.

All of these issues are accreditation issues. What Penn State deserves to have happen is for the university to lose its accreditation. We can debate whether or not the NCAA has jurisdiction in this matter, but there is certainly no question that Penn State's accrediting agency has complete jurisdiction over everything that happens on that campus.

The consequences would be staggering. You want the football team to get the death penalty? If PS loses its accreditation, they can no longer be in the NCAA. All of their sports would get the death penalty. Athletes would have to transfer, but so what? They will still get to play college sports and have their tuition paid for and receive outstanding college educations.

Not only would athletes have to transfer. Penn State would lose access to all federal funding. Students would no longer be able to use federally funded student loans to pay for tuition. This would force them to have to transfer. How many students would Penn State lose immediately? 10,000? 20,000? Who knows? It would also cause new enrollment numbers to hit rock bottom.

So 20,000 students might have to transfer? Do I care? Let's not forget the spectacle of Penn State students rioting when Paterno was fired. Over the years Penn State students and alumni have helped to create the environment that enabled this tragedy that occurred. These students will go on to get college degrees from outstanding universities...it just won't be Penn State. So what?

Yank their accreditation for one year. Then, after a year, if they have proven that their administrative house is in order, reaccredit them. The consequences...the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of students...will still be devastating and will take them at least a decade to recover from. It's really the only way to restore public confidence in the university.

This is what I think Penn State deserves. However, since their accreditation is not currently on probation, it would never happen. And that is why the football program won't get the death penalty by the NCAA. Regardless of whether the NCAA has jurisdiction, they will never give the death penalty to a program that isn't already on probation and doesn't have a history of lack of institutional control or cheating.

So since we're really talking about what we would like to see...not what actually will happen...that's what I would like to see. Give the whole university the death penalty. Yank their accreditation.
