Penn State was facing the death penalty for 4 years.

  • Mind-blowing.

The article also seems to confirm something I've been telling people all week. This wasn't just Mark Emmert. Consider this quote:

"...a core group of NCAA school presidents had agreed early last week that an appropriate punishment was no Penn State football for four years."

Emmert wasn't alone on that stage Monday. He spoke with the authority of 22 university presidents and chancellors...his board...and who knows how many other presidents and chancellors. If you were to poll every president and chancellor of every NCAA institution, I would bet that 80+% would say they agree with Emmert's decision. And that's the bottom line. The NCAA isn't some nebulous governmental agency. It is the universities, and therefore, the presidents.

Another interesting thing seen in the article is that they still have serious governance issues at Penn State. Many trustees are furious about having been kept in the dark about what was coming, when some board members knew.

Penn State Nittany Lions -- Rodney Erickson said school faced 4-year death penalty - ESPN

If Penn State had not accepted the package of NCAA sanctions announced Monday, the Nittany Lions faced a historic death penalty of four years, university president Rodney Erickson told Outside the Lines.

  • Yeah many places all day today have said the other penalty was No football for 4 years and that is why Penn State agreed to these sanctions so quickly. I guess anyone would.

  • When Emmert took over he vowed a tougher more muscular NCAA. His first opportunity to prove it was the Cam case. We know how that turned out. Egg on face.

It's just my opinion but I think he seized the chance to let every school in the NCAA know what's at stake if you choose the image of winning over the image of integrity.

  • If you read the Freeh report in its entirety; the only thing that may have prevented shutdown of the Football Program would be the economic impact of the community and the sympathy for students, fans, and alumni as well as the positive academic credentials of the school.
Institutions such as Penn State have a lot of accountability; and the facts are pretty unfathomable; This situation is the equivolent to Alabama of Nick Saban, Dr. Witt, Mal Moore, etc. not only harboring a known child predator but supporting him by giving him access and other means to continue criminal behavior.
Any business, organization, and especially an institution of higher learning has to take some sort of accountability, and ultimately keeping the integrity of the football program as the report describes was the primary motivation. At the end of the day, the report shows the flaws in the Penn State System and calls for a restructuring to prevent something this awful ever happening again. I don't think the NCAA's sanctions are only a penalty, but also a "time out" because changes need to be made at that Institution although it creates collateral damage unfair to thousands of people. I hope institutions use this example to evaluate their current structures and take positive and preventative measures.

They could have suspended the football program indefinitely until changes are made.

  • A couple of newer trustees were talking tough and complaining about not being informed and having an opportunity to vote on accepting the NCAA's deal. Well, I guess when the trustees met today, the rest of trustees put them in their place. The entire board reaffirmed Erickson's decision and, as boards are supposed to do, came out of the meeting speaking with one message.

Also, to say that Erickson made the deal without consulting the board of trustees is technically not correct. As soon as he notified the board chairwoman, he had done his duty to notify the board. By letting Erickson proceed, the chairwoman bears responsibility. If anyone is to be faulted for not notifying the entire board, she was.

Very good post. The bottom line is something like this can never happen again & a school will never think of covering up something criminal to protect a sport at their school.
