Phil Steele says...

  • # 1 ALABAMA at ARKANSAS

Naturally the story line here is the injury to Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson who is ? for this game. Alabama has now won 5 in row in this series. The last time here, Arkansas appeared on its way to an upset as they led 20-7 in the 3Q and Bama didn’t get its first lead until 3:18 was left in the game in a 24-20 road win. Last year at home the Tide rolled to a 38-14 win with a 397-226 yard edge. Arkansas is off last week’s shocking 34-31 OT loss to ULM (Ark led 28-7 mid-3Q)! QB Wilson took several shots and was KO’d of the game in the 1H (concussion-like symptoms) and never returned. If he can’t go backup QB Allen who went just 6-20-85 last week will get the reps but keep in mind two wks ago South Carolina backup QB Thompson looked bad relieving an inj'd Shaw but after a week of practice threw for more than 300 yards last week vs E Carolina (naturally Bama is much better than ECU but the point stands). Last week in a huge flat spot, the Tide beat WKU 35-0 but actually were outFD’d thru 3Q’s and despite outweighing the WKU DL by 45 lbs per man the Bama OL allowed 6 sacks! QB McCarron did throw for a career-high 4 td’s. I am shocked that Alabama is now favored by nearly three touchdowns and with everyone piling on the Hogs this week, I actually think they have a shot to be competitive here.

  • If it is that close after what ULM did to them I would be shocked.

  • After the last few years i just find it hard to believe anyone is gonna score 20 points on this team. I think realistically to beat us right now a team has to hold us under 20 and that in itself is difficult. Even in 2010 we still rarely gave up that many points, so when i see people predicting these types of score its just hard to believe.

in relation to Bama games, I'd say quite the opposite.

  • Phil Steele may not always be right, but he is right often enough, and he always has some facts/stats that support his opinion.

I personally don't think our game will be that close, but I DO think this game has the potentialt to be "weird" if Tyler Wilson doesn't play. Anything can happen in any given game. Arky "should" play like a ticked-off team with nothing to lose.

Yep, he has been pretty money on our games. We won't cover every game and 21.5 points is a lot. I'm not touching it but obviously think we win

  • Obvious statement of the season: "Bama is much better than Eastern Carolina"...

    bama1235

  • He is in cahoots with Vegas on this one. They are trying to get somebody, anybody, to bet on the hogs on this one because everybody and their mother knows there is no way possible this is a close game with Wilson out. Notice how he referenced a completely other schools backup QB performance to make his point? Who'd they play?? East Carolina?? Could u ever in your wildest imaginations compare East Carolina with Alabama or South Carolina with Arkansas without Wilson? How on earth could anyone predict this with a straight face is beyond me. This is off the reservation of accuracy.

"That's what people know us as..ya understand!"

Agreed, Bama is likely to cover 21 points in the first half. Easy money.

He's obviously putting a lot of faith that Allen will improve greatly this week by getting the bulk of the practice reps

  • Without Wilson - Alabama 38 Arkansas 10
    With Wilson - Alabama 38 Arkansas 24

  • If they score 20 without Wilson I will have serious doubts about our status as a NC contender. Don't see it happening though.

I think Arkansas scored one touchdown after Wilson left the game (plus the FG in OT). If they can't do any better than that against ULM, how does anyone expect them to score more than 6 or 7 on Bama?

  • Steele is a good one. I disagree w him on this but think he's as solid as they come.

  • Anything can happen, folks. The Hogs' season comes down to this game. IF Wilson is healthy and plays, IF they can protect him, IF they can run the ball a bit and IF we make a bunch of mistakes, who knows?

    Bryant Denny

  • 38-7, we give up a junk touchdown late in the 4th quarter.

    GooPhi

  • A tight game, I have seen Allen play several times when he was at Fayetteville HS, he's got the game, don't underestimate him. With a weeks prep, he will look different than he did against ULM.

    Bama 20 - Ark 15

    Bama 2 TD's/2 FG's
Ark 3 FG's, late TD, fail to convert 2 point conversion late in the game

I hope its 50-0 in favor of the good guys, Roll Tide
Nothing would make me happier if thats the case since I live in Fayetteville. Then they can stick that Sooie Pig cheer where the sun don't shine!

    pbsoup999

  • I think everyone is wrong here, including Phil Steele. We're in deep trouble with this game. I think Arkansas wins 100-3.

    Ashevillain

  • I say 23-10. I'm not convinced that Bama won't take Arky too lightly if Wilson is out.

Agree with that. It is a dangerous game, especially if Wilson plays. They will be fired up and desperately need something like this to turn season around.
