Phillip Ely/scrimmage

  • I know he is not popular among the BOL crowd, but he showed courage, pocket presence, and a good arm today. He took a ton of snaps with Phillip Sims nursing a sore shoulder. Don't believe Alabama just gives away scholarships...he may be a good one. He faced the first team D almost all day.
    Christion Jones is a player!
Classic Coach Saban describing Duron Carter's chances of playing. Can't betray a trust but don't hold your breath to see Duron any time soon.

If Gary Hoolingsworth can be a good QB, then I'm sure Ely certainly can. Now our deep game might be somewhat limited, but his arm has to be stronger than Hollingsworth's was. No disrespect to Gary Hollingsworth intended. He was very good for us.

Agree about Ely. He looked much better than I would've expected, especially as the scrimmage went on. He did throw a few INTs, but he made some really impressive throws as well. He's only a RS freshman and may never start (then again he may one day), but I think in another year or 2 he could be a really solid backup QB and be serviceable if pressed into action. He was a pleasant surprise for me today.

You can't say that. According to some on this site it was a wasted schollie and we are doomed at qb after AJ leaves.

I'll take their opinion over people that are actually watching practice and working with the players :)

well here is my track record on QB call-outs.

" the coach that forces Cody Burns under center will get fired." -CHECK !!
" Star Jackson will never start at Bama now that AJ has committed. "- CHECK !!
" AJ will be a three year starter & be the South squads #1 QB in the Senior Bowl ." -TBD
"Phillip Ely isnt Dan Marino but compares favorably to Joe Montana at the same juncture." -TBD
"K.Frazier may be the FUTURE but he isnt much in the Present." - TBD

I hope you continue to have a good track record.

  • Most kids that develop ...develop dramatically about two years out of high school..Phillip may be a decent back up or may turn into an All American...only time will tell.....um, when did AJ start looking like a great QB?...yep a little over two years out of High school....I wouldnt be surprised to see him surprise us all.

Good to hear - thanks for the note. I will watch his development with interest as I saw him differently than many after watching his film. He appeared to be a very capable game manager and play maker.

  • Does he favor John Parker Wilson from a size and arm strength standpoint? Cause if so that's clearly good enough to win with.

  • mcelroy clone IMO. not ready now but in a couple years he could be an option

Agreed. We've already proven that we don't have to have Heisman QB talent to win titles.

Some idiots on this board act like we never evaluate a QB before he comes on campus. Phillip Ely attended multiple camps. We watched in high school and viewed hours of film. We didn't offer him just for the hell of it. CNS and the rest of staff thinks he can play, or he would NOT have been offered.

  • Glad to have him at Bama. Seems like a hard worker and a student of the game. That is all you can ask for. He obviously has enough talent to be on scholarship at QB for the top program in the country.

    BamaKeg

  • Some folks on campus say he's closer to 5'10" rather than 6'1". Looks a bit short during pregame warm ups last year.

I'm still looking forward to Phillip Sims getting some quality reps during the season.
