This isn't directed at you, as I have no idea what your friends' situations are...

    BUT...

...the "if I could buy student tickets I would, but I'm stuck on the waiting list," argument sort of irks me. It irks me because 8 years ago, there WAS NO WAITING LIST. I know, because I graduated and I (along with all my classmates that applied) got tickets the very first year. 5 years ago there was a waiting list, but if you were on it then, you should have gotten tickets with the most recent expansion.

Now, obviously there are people who have only graduated or gotten to a position where they can afford tickets in the last 5 years... but I see an awful lot of people claiming that they'd like to have the opportunity to buy them, but can't. And some of those people need to be asked... where was your application and money when we were 4-7? 3-8? 4-9? 6-7?

About 10-15,000 of us were there during the Shula era, graduated at the start of the Saban era and basically got the worst of both worlds : we stunk while there and even though many of jumped on the waiting list our senior years still had zero shot to get season tickets.

So yea, we don't like it.

So college football is about students?
Is college football really about acedemics?

  • I'm a student here, and I am Greek. We got to the stadium about 45 minutes before kickoff last night and the lower deck was 98% full. We did not have seats, but instead stood in the aisle about 5 rows up in the endzone. I shared the little stair with two other people and was constantly elbowed and shoved, but that was fine. That's how badly we don't want to be in the upper deck. Being up there takes us out of the atmosphere completely. This is my third year here, and I have been that person who left early a handful of times (western kentucky type games). However, I have never left an SEC game, ranked or not, or any big game early including last night. There is a problem with people leaving, but we can't all be blamed. We also noticed last night that the A Club around the 30-40 yard line was emptying out, too, you just can't tell because they have crimson colored seats. Here's a picture with about 8 minutes left in the third quarter. Also, the upper deck is a recent problem because four years ago, before the expansion, the entire student section was in the lower deck. I can't say how full that stayed because I wasn't here yet, but just FYI.

Yes, that sucks. Complain away, then, you've got that right. I don't think that's the case for a good portion of the "I'd buy tickets but I'm on the waiting list" crowd.

  • At least they're leaving because we are blowing teams out. Auburn students leave in the 2nd quarter because aTm is beating by 35 before the half. You guys taking pictures of an a depleted student section seem to be getting into the games just fine. I say expand the student section because as much as I loved being in that section, it was crowded constantly, even during Shulas years. We crowd into a small pocket which gives the illusion of emptiness.
The dumbest thing a college can say is, we need to let fewer students into THEIR football games.

There was always a massive sense of entitlement from the older UA fans who remember the Bryant era. I am a little surprised to see students become so accustomed to and board with blow outs this quickly.

    Agreed.

The lower end zone and upper deck are only maybe half the student section. That's my point. This photo, at 4:39 left in the game, shows the still full other half of the student section. So realize that the earlier pictures are showing half the students section half full. That means the whole section is still 75% full.

The upper deck is bad because the students don't go there. Instead, they just flood the seats in this pic, which no one notices because they're full.

Thank you for bringing some sanity to this discussion.

I'm so tired of people posting pictures of the Greek section and then whining about the students leaving. The other students DON'T LEAVE. I was in that section from the time the gates opened until the clock read 0:00. The corner/sideline student seats WERE FULL the ENTIRE GAME. The people who claim otherwise are flat-out wrong.

Personally, I think block seating is BS. Someone who gets there an hour before kickoff and stays all game should not have a worse seat than a drunk frat guy who stumbles in 5 minutes before kickoff and leaves at halftime. I'm not saying every Greek is like this or even a lot of them, but it shouldn't even be possible.

There are a lot of opinions here, but I, for one, believe the block seating in the Greek section is the primary issue followed closely by the uper deck nonsense. Eliminate the block seating and the upper deck student section. IF doing so leads to a legitimate ticket shortage for students (as evidenced by their strong attendance for all four quarters at every home game plus demand for more tickets), then expand the student section a bit...or create some standing room only tickets for students.

  • I know students that just have there cards scan as they were at the game but head back home. They told me that they can lose their tickets if they are not at so many of the games. The students I talked to do not want to wait all day to get the lower level seats and hate the uppers.

Any student caught doing this needs to be banned from tickets as long as they're at the school. If you don't want your ticket, sell it or donate it. I'm dead serious when I tell you that you should report them to the ticket office.
