Prevent D

  • It wasn't a prevent d. It was a 33. It is designed to keep the ball in front, short and in the middle. Bama didn't execute. Had we blitzed a corner it would have left a safety or lb covering a receiver. Blitzes are all or nothing. They were begging for a blitz. With Aaron's abillity to avoid the rush and abillity to extend the play it was asking for a big play. We almost got an interception off the d. And had they made a few tackles the game would have been over. The d was right the execution was off. Also give credit to UGa for running a near flawless two minute drill.

  • Dislike the 3 man rush but I hated the fact that we weren't putting guys on the ground in bounds. We let them get out & stop the clock which was the real problem

  • For many years, I have considered the three man rush to be highly ineffectual. It can be useful against the right QB. However, with someone like Murray who can be extremely accurate when given time, that is much less likely. At times, in the second half, we appeared to have a successful "push" with 4. I think Pagan was in that group; I don't recall others. IMHO, this might have been a better defensive strategy, coach Saban's explanation aside. I wonder if circumstances are similar against ND, if we employ a 3 man rush. I don't know...but I will be surprised if we do.

Jabrill Peppers...More I watch, the more I'm convinced he is the best player in the 2014 class. Barring injury, he will do special things.

  • I joked to a Vol buddy that I thought Kirby Smart had morphed into John Chavis and that we were seeing the infamous "mustang package." lol

But as has been pointed out, if we make a tackle or two before they get out of bounds, the game is over.

  • It lost us the most important game in Bama history when we were not competing for championships-Ala Aub,,2010.
    Cam Newton.
I hated it then and I fear it now.

How do you guys feel about the Prevent D? Just curious...

Hate it but their is a place for it in some games. Most people start playing it with to much time left.
    That will get you beat.

  • I defer to the master...CNS.
But....it drives me crazy to let any QB sit back and pick apart the secondary.

  • The prevent defense is very effective in the NFL b/c the clock doesn't stop after a 1st down like it does in college. The college coaches with NFL backgrounds need to understand this. Yes if we tackle the Tight end the game is over, but we didn't and stayed in that god forsaken defense. At least act like you are going to bring pressure to make the QB think he has to get rid of the ball sooner . I mean we try to disguise defenses all game ntil this situation. Or drop 2 linemen back into coverage . Or tell the linemen to take one step, back off and try to bat down any pass. The prevent cost LSU against us and almost cost us that game. People that rely on the execution argument need to do some research and stop relying on theory.

  • I think the coach was right in using the Prevent D.
Because it emphasizes one thing: the fact that you cannot CANNOT let the big one get thrown on you. That CANNOT happen . . . and it didn't.

hated it. I say we should have gone after muray their.

I hate the prevent to. Should rush four and not allow so much time for the reciever to get open. I agree that you should keep the play in front of you and inbounds. Almost cost the game. But we won.

  • LSU started on their 20 with 40 or 41 seconds left. Bama only rushed three, but got pressure and Mett checked down to the back twice before getting sacked. The three getting pressure made a big difference.

UGA, after the int was overturned, was at their 28 with like 48 seconds left. Bama rushed three, like at LSU, but got no pressure and Murray found receivers down field.

The situations were pretty similar, moreso than I thought. Bama's rush was just more effective against LSU.

yep..the d would of been fine had we put lynch down the two catches he had early on.

I hated it the moment I saw us start with it that last series. But it wasn't until I read what Saban said after the game that with so little time on the clock they were playing to keep the ball in bounds so they put several guys close to the sidelines to do just that. He had a special name for it that means keeping it in bounds (don't remember). He said if a play or 2 stays in bounds the game is over. But we didn't execute and they kept getting out of bounds. Then it made perfect sense. and I would agree that we should use it in that situation. You may recall that we went back to our regular pass defense when the ball got around the 30.

He called it "33 Zone". We were screaming about the prevent at the game but hearing his description made sense and it looke like we should have made the tackle in bounds. (Was in the upper deck so i could be wrong)

  • You would think rushing three only would leave eight to cover the receivers which they did not do very well.I think you have to rush more and put pressure on Murray. He had way to much time to make his throws.

Prevent Defense will 99% of the time prevent you from a win.

We were the 1% last night....

  • Bottomline when we execute the defensive gameplan we are in BEASTmode, but when we do not our lack of experience shows.

Not sure how it transpired, but it appeared Lester blew the coverage allowing that long pass earlier in the game. I think that was when Gurley scored? Hard to tell during the game
