Q&A with the BOL Staff

  • Staff - have you ever gotten the impression that someone on CNS's staff has looked at BOL a time or two?

  • Staff if possible please answer the following questions.

    1) Who has been the most influential person in your professional career? Everyone at BOL and 247Sports has played role- especially Tim (putting up with me on a daily basis) and Shane (who put in a lot of time helping me get acquainted with everything) as well as JC Shurburtt who has been nothing but huge for my career.

    2) When building relationships with coaches and players, what, besides honesty, is the biggest factor? I'd say being able to relate to what they're going through and having something football-related to talk about besides the bare-bones recruiting stuff.

    3) What morning habits have you developed to help you get into work mode? (examples: check the message boards, call a co-worker for updates, sing the Bama fight song over and over while making breakfast)
Good question...I've definitely developed a morning routine. I make coffee (usually Starbucks French Roast black), and then eat a bowl of oatmeal (1/2 maple brown sugar and 1/2 regular). Then I'll go check the boards and listen to whatever music I'm feeling at the time- it's been Paul's Boutique and the new Beach House album for the last few days.

    4) If you could pick 3 words to describe the members of BOL, what would they be? There's a lot of synonyms, but I'll go ardent, perceptive, and endearing.

    5) Forget Bama for a second, when you think of the most overrated/underrated athletes of the last decade, what names come to mind? It's hard for me to pick an actual group ones that are overrated or underrated, since it's more of an individual thing for me (although Lucky gave an amazing, and accurate answer). To steal Tim's future answer- inside linebackers, especially ones who are 6'0 or shorter.

    BONUS QUESTION (submitted by bama764)

What would you do for a Klondike bar? I would've done about anything for Klondike bar to put on my forehead when I woke up in sweat last night. But really, not a huge ice cream fan right now, but was more of a Dove Bar guy growing up.

Lebron James will never be as good as Michael Jordan, thus we should get rid of his nickname, "The King".

I'm thinking subscribers by the tone of your post. OK - I'm going to press my luck on this question, any chance you've seen one of my wallpapers on someone's computer inside the athletic department?

Charles Power - thank you for your answers, I see a trend with people checking the boards in the a.m. Good stuff! Also props on the word "ardent".

Let me clarify - I know absolutely, positively, that numerous people on the football staff check this site each and every day.

... as for the second question, can't say I have, but they also keep reporters out of the athletic offices as much as possible. We barely go into anyone's office in sports information.

Thanks for the response! I'm not surprised at all, they know a great product when they see one in BOL! The only reason I asked about wallpapers is because last year someone posted a picture of one of the offices and this wallpaper was on the PC in the background. Anyway thanks for the responses, greatly appreciated.

    BONUS QUESTION (submitted by bama764)

What would you do for a Klondike bar?

1.] A guy named Greg Larson, former columnist/reporter for the Florida-Times Union who currently hosts a sports talk show down in the Jacksonville area. News breaker, entertaining and informative. Does all three better than anyone I've ever heard/read.

2.] Knowledge of the topic. If you don't know the topic extremely well, you don't know what to ask or who to ask. And coaches and players pick up on that very quickly. Broke more news this way than any other. If the flock goes one way, you're probably better off going the other.

3.] Raisin Bran, sip of OJ and cup of Starbucks Sumatra. Repeat.

    4.] Second to none.

5.] Underrated: Maurice Jones-Drew. Earnest Shelton. Ryan Freel.
Overrated: Sergio Garcia. Knowshon Moreno. Brandon Spikes.

BONUS: Steal Walsh's bottle of Jameson.

    4) If you could pick 3 words to describe the members of BOL, what would they be? Crazy (and I mean that in a good way), loyal and hungry. You guys/gals are like sponges. True true, I was at an informal sit-down with Saban when he said to me and a few other reporters that Calloway was going to gets shot at outside linebacker. When I asked which outside spot he looked at me like I was nuts and I quickly responded, 'It'll be the first thing I get asked.' He just nodded like, 'Yeah, it is.'

We're you allowed to look at him directly in the eyes? If so, did your skin start to burn a little?

Well I see quite a bit we have in common here. Your overrated list sealed the deal for me though. Couldn't agree more!
