Question on Combine 40 yd dash times

  • Does anyone know why there appears to be so much subjectivity? There are the unofficial times, official times, and I justly read where teams keep their own times. Isn't starting and crossing the line something that can be accurately measured with technology and reported immediately?

  • They need time after the run to synchronize the satellite lasers with the on-field lasers. They are equally accurate, but set at different angles. The scouts don't get caught up in 1/100ths of seconds like we do because they know what they're looking for.

    Douché!

  • Okay, so a little googling answered my own question. Electronic times (like the "official" times) are rely on hand movement to start the clock. Some players don't get a good jump out of their stance, so an electronic time will penalize those players; at the end of the day, teams care about how fast you rather than how well trained you are to come out a three point stance correctly. That is the reason why they have multiple people hand time the run; they can throw any outlier times, average the rest, and come up with a time that measures more closely what they want to have measured.

In other words, they just guess at which time is right and glue it on the guy?
