Question to Ponder re: the new playoff format

  • How much does the system hurt attendance at the games, particularly the semis?
I for one can barely afford/justify spending money for the championship game: no way on earth I go to both in consecutive weekends (or close).

When Bama makes the four team playoff I'm taking my chances we make it to the final, I'm not going to the semis.

The logistics of the championship game; the city can prepare in advance for the game regardless of who's in the game but the fanbase cannot. It's nightmarish to think about booking rooms and flights sometimes in as little as six days after confirming you are in the game.

Just some of the things outside the game that are going to change. Food for thought folks, not being negative as I believe this helps our chances to win more championships...who will be first to go 15-0 ?

  • I imagine it will hurt attendence some, but the games make most of their money through tv contracts, right? I could be wrong about this. But if it does I would assume the powers that be wouldn't consider it as much of an issue as long as they get theirs. As for the timelines of things, have they decided a schedule for all of this? Maybe moving the first two games back a week or so would help space it out. As it stands there's over a month between most teams last games and the usual NC game.

  • Travel costs will be a burden but I would be shocked if ticket prices dont drop for the semis and title game

I've been making this point to playoff proponents for as long as I can remember. Fans aren't going to drop that kind of cash to go to semifinal games, even in a good economy.

The huge number of college football fans around the country are fans of teams that will rarely or never make the playoffs anyway. They've never spent $1,500 or more per person to fly to a bowl location. They have no clue.

Semifinal games are going to be a very difficult sell to the participating teams, and the high face value which these tickets will no doubt sell for will prohibit inhabitants of host cities from attending, unless they happen to be a fan of one of the teams. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see 10,000 to 20,000 empty seats at semifinal games.

The bowl game and the city care about the attendance. Athletic Directors and Presidents care about TV ratings.

  • Don't forget about the cost of paying for the SECCG ticket which is usually pretty darn pricey too. Then you lead into Christmas and then those 2 games.

Remember that if people can't afford the ticket then demand comes down. When the demand comes down the price comes down. When the price comes down the affordability goes up.

Everyone is assuming the price for all of these things is going to stay constant. If demand drops as drastically as is suspected then ticket prices will reflect that demand reduction. Hotel prices will as well.

  • My guess is it will be similar to college baseball, sub the colleges for the cities/stadiums.

Require stadiums to put in bids to host semi-final games at the beginning of each season. New Orleans, Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Tampa Bay, Chicago, Indy, Cleveland, Cincy, Pittsburgh, New York, Washington DC, Dallas, Houston, Glendale, San Diego, L.A., San Francisco, Detroit, Seattle, and St Louis could all put in their bids by the 20th of October. Then when you get to the last week of the regular season, announce what 2 cities won the bids for the semi-final games based on highest bid and geography. The finals could rotate, naturally.

So let's say on the Monday of the final week of the regular season you had this top 8..

    Florida State
    LSU
    Southern Cal
    Alabama
    Michigan
    Wisconsin
    Texas
    Oregon

Then you could award the bids to one of Nashville/NOLA/ATL and either Indy or California.
