RG3 has regained my respect

  • My initial reaction to Griffin's comments after the Texas game ("I think Baylor just won its first Heisman") was just shy of disgust. I wasn't the only one, and for that reason they (Skip Bayless, Stephen A. Smith, Jay Crawford) interviewed him on First Take today, and he clarified it. The main thing to me was that he repeatedly said "Baylor" and "we". He never once referred to it as an individual award and even got interrupted when he tried to give his OL credit.

Realizing now that he really did mean Baylor, and not himself, I find I like him a lot more. He's more confident than Trent, but didn't come off as cocky like Tyran Mathug. I also underestimated his performance against Texas, and after hearing it described, I've realized that I have absolutely no problem with this man winning the Heisman. While I would prefer for Trent to win, I also see what he was able to do with no help whatsoever. He finally played a good defense and ripped it apart. I don't think he would be as successful in the SEC statistically, but I do think he could go 9-3 or 10-2 at Florida and probably could have run the table at Georgia..

Like Vince Young, Trent should win this but won't because in the same year there just happened to be someone doing ridiculous things. And like Vince Young, I think he would win the award if it was voted on after bowl season was over (seeing as Bush was a non-factor and didn't even get the bulk of his team's carries while Young put the team on his back when it came down to the wire). That said, I'm okay with it. What do you think?

Didn't hear the interviews do just playing devil's advocate here, but do you think he might have been coached on what to say? With that said, I think he is deserving of the award and I hope he was sincere in what he was saying.

  • Disagree. Heard him talk another time and he came off very cocky and self-absorbed. No love for his offensive line or WRs, all about himself.

Trent has earned the Heisman by going against SEC defenses and showing out for years. RG 3 cost his team a few games- something Trent never did this season.

Plus, Trent led us to a NCG, RG3 cost his team a chance at a BCS bowl.

It's not fair to say he cost them the game any more than you can say the bad FG call cost OSU the game. I don't even think Weeden's pick in OT cost them the game. The fact that the defense put them in such a precarious position is the reason they lost. This is a defense that gave up 30 points to KANSAS.

As for the attitude, he didn't sound like that at all. Based on what I heard, he sounded like a team player.

Oh, and Skip Bayless can go play in traffic. Apparently the fact that LSU won in Tuscaloosa is more important than the fact that we outplayed them and OSU is the better team because the Big 12 is "underrated". Stephen A. Smith had it right though.

  • I love RG3. Obviously I want Trent to win it, but if he didn't I hope it goes to RG3. The kid is an amazing player and throws the deep ball better than most guys in the NFL. Baylor would be 3-9 instead of 9-3 if it weren't for Griffin. Anyways, hope Trent wins it and Griffin comes in 2nd but I would have no beef with Griffin winning it unlike Luck (best pro prospect in college football yet threw 9 ints and played bad in a couple of games), Ball (good RB who is more a product of having Russell Wilson and an amazing O-line), and the Herbal Badger (great player but has been ordinary in a couple of games this season not to mention the fact that he is a stoner and character is supposed to be part of the Heisman decision).

My vote if I was a voter:

    1)Trent Richardson
    2)Robert Griffin III
    3)Andrew Luck
    4)Montee Ball
    5)Herbal Badger

Also, I think due to Matheiu missing a game due to suspension, he should not of been a finalists and in his place should have been Collin Klein from Kansas State. Some of you may have never heard of him but watch his highlights and look at the stats and how he led his mediocre team to a 10-2 season and you will agree with me.

I think he was talking about OSU's missed field goal against Iowa State. It went pretty much directly over top of the right upright. It could be debated that it was just a hair to the left of center, but it's a bit of a stretch. There was nothing in the footage I saw that would reverse the on-field call of no good, and honestly from what the officials saw on the field, directly under the goal post, I think no good was probably the correct call to make in live action. If that kick was low enough to hit the upright, there is almost no doubt in my mind that it would have bounced back into the field of play.

I had a feeling that was what he was referring to. I agree with you 100%

  • Directly above the posts is by rule No Good. The entire football must be to the inside of the uprights for it to be called good. The NFL has a slightly different rule as well.

  • I'm good as long as its RG3, and not Luck. Luck didn't earn it this year. His draft projection would be getting rewarded, not his productivity this year. I like Luck, but he's not worthy of the Heisman.

And for the record, RG3 comes across as extremely humble. Ya, his comment was a bit "confident" and it caught me off gaurd, but every other time I've seen him, he seems truly humbled.

  • If you have listened to this kid his entire career like I have, you would always have good things to say about him. I have been a big RG3 fan since before he got hurt last year and I just jnew he would be great, especially when I first him speak and how much he does for his community. The 3 best players in the country IMO are TR, AL, and RG3. ANd it doesnt hurt to KNOW that all 3 of these guys are the most classiest competitors too. RG3 is so impressive off the field it makes him that much more likable to go along with his greatness on the field. AL is the same way and hes doing what he does without any good WR's. We all know TR, hes a beast and a great person to boot.

well said, HHM, and I completely agree. Those guys are special. RG3 is one of the smartest people out there, not just at football but in the classroom too... As everyone has said, I hope TR wins, but RGIII is deserving as well...

  • Welcome to the party. No one has been listening to me because our fans' glasses are so crimson colored that they are too obtuse to see that RGIII is a GREAT TEAM guy. All year he's been talking in terms of what all this means to BAYLOR. I heard an interview with him on Yahoo Sports Radio Friday (the day before he kicked Texas's ass) and told the host that this was a TEAM award. No matter how hard the host tried, RGIII would not change from this position and make it about RGIII.

This is one classy kid. I tried to be the voice of reason Saturday when everyone was "disgusted" by RGIII's comments. But, of course, no one was listening. Frankly, I think we'll have our chance and TR is certainly deserving of a Heisman b/c he exhibits the same class as RGIII. But, I have no problem with RGIII winning it b/c it would mean the world to his football program.

  • He made the comment " I think Baylor just won it's first Heisman " after that game because Tejas came into that games saying no one from Baylor was winning a Heisman on Texas.

I did not know that. This really would explain those comments perfectly. Thanks gd; because I too was shocked RGIII said that. It seemed completely out of character for him. This makes me feel much better about him.

  • I'm rooting for Trent but I will not be upset if rg3 wins it. Great guy and great football player.

  • One thing about rg3 is that he ain't no Trent Richardson!! flex.Trent is without a doubt the best player in college football period. Its a shame the ones that get to vote are such little titty babies that they are listening to talking heads and clearly screwing him out of the honor he deserves!!
