Re: Top DL. You Guys Need to Understand

  • It's going to be hard for Bama to land top tier defensive lineman. Our style of defense just doesn't call for the lineman to be sack monsters. These top lineman mostly want to go to a 4-3 defense where they use the lineman to put pressure on the QB. Our D just needs them to be big and take up space (if you will).

If you go back and look at everyone of our recruiting classes you won't see very high rankings on the D line. Hell even Dareus was just a 3 star.

  • But recruiting rankings is important!!!

  • I don't necessarily agree with that. I think there is a certain type of player that is a challenge, and that is that true 4-3 end who is a bit big for a linebacker but isn't interested in being a 3 technique (RN). We've recruited pretty dang well on the DL in reality.

I agree with this. Maybe if you said it will be hard for Alabama to recruit top tier smaller DE who are better suited from a 4-3 then sure. However to say that it's going to be hard for Bama to land top tier defensive lineman in general is ignoring the market.

The 3-4 has exploded in the NFL, about a decade ago it was Pittsburg and maybe one other team and now half the teams in the NFL run it and that number grows basically every season.

We put DL in the NFL ever season including Dareus who was drafted 3 overall and played all over the line for us and is one of the best young tackles in the league. Jesse Williams playing NT will be a first round pick as well. I think Adrian Hubbard and LiMichael Fanning are going to be sick.

I don't see really any scenario where recruits are turned off by that, sure you will have some that just don't fit but if we are talking about RN he would excel as a 3-4 end and would kill it at Alabama and on to the NFL. He is 6-4, 280 and would be a perfect fit for UA.

  • I think that the basic understanding is obvious. We are going to have certain guys every year that fall through because of the D we run. Top 3 come 2 mind Clowney(we fought tooth an nail for that kid but he wanted to put his hand down an wasnt a fit as 3-4 end. 2nd Eddie Goldman(this is a guy that I really wanted I mean desperately) and now Robert N has commited somewhere else. I believe that there is still a little catching up to do in the minds of these young recruits the wants stats so they go to a 4-3 team thinking stats alone get you in the NFL. But in reality more than half the NFL runs a 3-4 or 3-4 variant I just think these top top guys can get past the chance that the arent going to walk in an dominant. This 1 with RN really hurts thought he was 95% to use an if he went elsewhere it would be Ole miss. With that said I dont for a 2nd believe that this thing is over an we've still got a chance maybe no a great 1 but a chance. Finnaly I emphatize with some of the other guys in I hate missing on these seemingly college ready D-lineman who are great athletes. But if we get them or not the Train will keep on rolling 1 way or the other. Roll Tide guys.

  • Also, the idea that defensive ends can't put up numbers in this scheme is a misnomer. Just go back and look at Wallace Gilberry's production from Saban's first season in Tuscaloosa: 80 tackles, 10 sacks, 27 TFL. Wallace Gilberry put up those numbers because he was a good pass-rusher with a non-stop motor. If you're a good pass-rusher, you're going to have the chance to stand out.
