Report: Harper could face severe penalties

  • NFL.com reported last night that Roman Harper is one of the players who might be facing a major penalties when the player penalties are announced.

Christopher Walsh covers Alabama football for BamaOnline, 247Sports, and is the author of 18 books.

  • So pointless. Why pay Roman to try and kill people, when he'd do it in the ordinary course of business?

  • Figured that was coming.

  • They need to come up with some sort of real evidence that those players actually got paid when they injured people. If they can prove that Roman Harper for example pocketed some cash when he hit Earl Bennett (which was a clean hit but I am not sure if that matters) then sure. However, if they are just guessing, I think the players union will fight back.

  • Someone seriously needs to put a bounty on Goodell. He's turned the pinnacle of the greatest sport on earth into an unwatchable mockery of the game. It's sickening what he's done to football.

I agree that there are far too many penalties called in the NFL for what are perceived to be illegal hits. But Goodell has no other choice but to harshly discipline coaches and players when there is overwhelming evidence of a bounty system.

Completely disagree. Screw Goodell and the horse he rode in on.

If you honestly don't think Goodell has a professional and moral obligation to protect to health players in the league that he presides over, I really don't know what to say to you.

If that's really what he thinks there's no reason to say anything. Some people will just refuse to see reason.

And if you honestly think this move is at all related to the health of the players, then I'd like to show you my product line. I have a few things I feel like I could sell you.

Tell me about your product line. I'm sure you're a fine business man.

If you don't want to put it on the safety of players, that's fine. But to put it another way, Goodell would be out of a job if he swept this whole thing under the rug.

It is about the concern for law suits and to protect the players.

I don't think the punishments are too harsh because Goodell previously warned them to knock it off without penalty and they essentially thumbed their noses at him.

No, it is about Goodell's ego and his attempts at destroying the game. I've found myself watching less and less NFL football since he's been in office. I honestly think I watched a combined 3-4 quarters of NFL football last year. I probably won't watch at all this year. He's just ruined it for people who really love the game.

So the commissioner of the NFL should turn a blind eye to the mounting evidence of the long term effects of injuries such as concussions, and risk the long term viability of the most popular sport in our country by continuing to expose it to lawsuits, because a guy like you sitting at home on his couch undertaking no risks likes the old rules better?

What? That's not even what we're talking about here. Try to keep up...or don't. I really don't care.

  • The people who try and defend the bounty system and attack Goodell are the same people who were mad at Fat Phil Fulmer when WE WERE doing wrong in the Albert Means' recruitment---just doesn't make sense. It's OK to dislike Fat Phil and Goodell for other reasons, but for being a disciplinarian in the league at the height of its popularity, trying to protect its players and keep the lawyers from taking away everything the NFL has worked for is not one of them.

I don't like the product as much either anymore...too many flags and way too much of an advantage given to the offense in the passing game. I hate the DB rules.

However, market and sport advantage regardless, he still has by far the most popular sports league in the country.

And I am not sure how you wanted him to react to the bounty. Once it became public knowledge, I mean come on, he has to act aggressively.

That's exactly what's being discussed. You think Goodell is doing a bad job because you don't enjoy football with the new rules as much as you did with the old rules, regardless of what the consequences may be to the players.

No, it isn't. Protecting players is one thing. Making the sport unwatchable while really not helping matters a bit is what we're discussing. Keep up or go away.
