Reuben Foster thoughts ...

  • It seems like everyday there's a new update on Reuben Foster. Everyone in the industry wants a quote and share a perspective. Reuben is a great football player and by changing schools for his senior campaign, and the constant unofficial visits, there's s obviously going to be good fodder for all kinds of speculation.

Personally, I think it has gotten out of hand over the past couple weeks -- and most of this is on the heels of Foster taking unofficial or casual visits to Georgia and Auburn. I don't think it is a good use of time to try and followup and follow every word on this subject until something substantive occurs. Here's some thoughts:

-- As Charles has said on many occasions, it should be status quo until Foster publicly says he is no longer committed to Alabama. That has not occurred and in fact, most of his comments have been extremely favorable toward Alabama.

-- Those that think Foster is a lock to sign with Alabama are dead wrong. Even though he is committed, Auburn and Georgia have made Foster a top target and there is obvious reciprocal interest from Foster. This is far from done and it will be until he signs on the dotted line.

-- There's a wide array of opinions from the industry (those that interview him) on where Foster will ultimately sign. The majority is slightly saying Alabama, but there's plenty of experts, including some I have great respect for, that feel he ends up somewhere other than Alabama.

-- Don't read too much into the "story of the day" or the "tweet of the day" regarding Foster. I know Dee Liner's comments fanned the flames and then according to Tweets there appears to be a rebuttal. My point is that I wouldn't get caught up into the day to day and back and forth of what's going on with Foster. There's probably a lot of created drama here just for the sensationalism affect.

So, to sum it all up. Here's what I believe to be true at this point. (1) Until Foster publicly de-commits, Alabama should be considered the favorite despite the various reports and how many visits to other schools he takes; (2) this is going to be a dogfight to the very end from Auburn, Georgia and who knows, other schools could join; (3) anyone that says, reports or infers that Foster is a lock (or, a done deal) to Alabama is smoking a team-flavored cigar -- that's just not the case. This is a fluid situation that's subject to change, or could stay the way it is.

Sit back and enjoy the ride, but I wouldn't get too overly anxious one way or the other ...

  • Thanks for the words of wisdom Lucky - it should be interesting until he signs on the dotted line. Sometimes I think these 17-18 year old kids are having some fun with gullible adults - you think! biggrin

Agree with your posts ... but here's the other part. The coaches recruiting these kids keep fighting to the end and/or until the kids shut them down. And in many cases, it is so difficult for the kids to just say, "done".

You mean it's true that people get locked in on a single recruit as a must have and other coaches from other institutions do whatever it takes to sway that said recruit from us? Are there people really on this board that smoke team flavored cigars? rumor Thank you for clearing that up Lucky. No flame toward you by the way, just jabbing at some others who feel they are BOARD GODS.

    Thanks for chiming in Lucky.

Obviously, there wouldnt be the multiple posts and great concern over RF's 'potential' flip, had he not transferred to AUBURN High-of ALL places. Just too close for comfort, for us Bama fans. AU commits say that RF is @ AU football facility almost DAILY.

If there was even 'good reason' to believe that RF was considering a flip to a school OTHER than AU, it wouldnt create NEAR the firestorm that him being @ Auburn High has caused. The kid is a SPECIAL talent. Want him @ Bama but ANYWHERE but Auburn.

  • Thanks, Shannon. This recruitment is getting old real fast and we'll get 7 more months of it. panic

  • You guys (mods) told us from day one this would take place.

It's really simple if he comes to Bama he will be one of the best players on a Championship team. If he goes to au he'll be THE best player on a 7-6 team.

Not a very strong selling point if I want to play "what's your ring size" football.

  • Amen Lucky, it amazes me how adults hang on these kids every word. But, I guess that's why some are on this site. You gave great words of wisdom in your message, thanks.

  • Thanks for the words a lot of us needed to be more patient in this RF process and let it play out, while trusting CNS and staff to do the very best job possible. It's a balancing act that all BOL members gladly "pay to play"--just gets hard on the nerves sometimes with recruits/commits like RF. I have to give credence, though, to the comments concerning CKS's status at UA being used in negative recruiting against us. But that's the case with some recruits at most schools every year--some assistant coach with ties to a top recruit is always rumored to be leaving his present job for another. That's why, IMO, the practice of naming a HC in waiting was initiated a few years ago--but we saw where that got UT with CWM!

I don't sweat recruiting like many do. Under Shula it was depressing and every 4 star was a must hit. With Saban we know he's going to recruit lights out. I hoped Foster would honor his commitment and not be the drama queen that the top guys always seem to be. Whether he stays committed or goes elsewhere ultimately will not make or break UA's recruiting class or on the field success. Same goes for Nkimdeche.

    Great breakdown.

Will you please post a similar breakdown on RN?

  • The questions I have are:

Will Alabama football be any more interesting if RF comes here?

Will Alabama football be any less interesting if RF doesnt come here?

    For me its simple...NO!

  • We are so loaded right now it's tough to get worried about a single recruit. That said, Foster is the best LB prospect I've seen since I started following recruiting so it would sting a little. We still have the entire season to get through which will have a great impact on these kids. By seasons end, we may have 2 LBs going in the top 3 or so rounds of the draft. If that, along with the emphasis we place on our LB core doesn't sell these kids, then it really is there loss. That's what I think after smoking my tasty Crimson cigar.
