Rolando McClain apologizes for "bad publicity"

  • From the Associated Press

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain apologized Tuesday for bringing bad publicity to the team following his recent conviction in Alabama for assault and other charges stemming for allegedly threatening to kill a man and firing a gun next to his head.

Decatur Municipal Judge Bill Cook convicted McClain last week of third-degree assault, menacing, reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm in the city limits last week and sentenced him to 180 days in jail.

McClain’s lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, said he will appeal to Morgan County Circuit Court and seek a jury trial. McClain is out on bail and rejoined the Raiders this week at the team’s offseason workouts.

McClain spoke to the media to give his apology and thank coach Dennis Allen and his teammates for their support. But he did not take any questions, citing the pending legal matters.

“I apologize for the bad publicity that has been put out there,” he said. “It is a legal process so I can’t talk much about it but I think in due time if the Raiders and the Raiders fans that are out there, we’ll all see, it will all come to an end and it is what it is. I can’t really talk much about it, but it will be resolved in the near future.”

The NFL is reviewing McClain’s case to determine if any punishment is warranted for violations of the league’s personal conduct policy. The Raiders will wait for the NFL to rule on discipline for McClain.

“Rolando’s part of our family, he’s part of our team,” Allen said. “We’re going to let the whole process play out before we do anything and once the whole legal proceedings are finished then we’ll determine what if any action we need to take.”

McClain was the eighth overall pick in the 2010 draft, but has failed to live up to the lofty expectations that came with that selection. He had 85 tackles, a half-sack and one interception as a rookie.

He showed signs of improvement last season with 99 tackles and five sacks but still had problems in coverage and sometimes took bad angles in the run game, leading to big plays.

McClain has allowed 73 completions in 115 pass attempts for 794 yards and seven touchdowns in his two seasons, according to STATS LLC.

“I think he’s done a real good job from a leadership standpoint,” Allen said. “I think he’s very instinctive. He’s smart out there. He’s taken command of the huddle. Those things I’ve been pleased with. Physically, I think as you look at him, I think what he needs to improve on, and he knows this, is a little bit of the pass coverage aspect.”

McClain has said he has been slowed the past two seasons by chronic pain in his knee and ankle. He told the Birmingham Press-Register earlier this offseason that he had a doctor inject fat cells from other parts of his body into his knee and ankle. McClain said he was able to sprint again without pain.

McClain took part in a voluntary minicamp last month, but missed last week’s OTA because of the trial. Allen said he has had no trouble learning the new defense.

“He’s not behind at all,” Allen said. “He’s actually ahead. He’s really smart. He understands the defense and he’s done a real good job in that regard.”

  • man i hate this happening to him. I hope he learns from all this and becomes a better man. Rolando is one of my favorite players.

  • Hope he is saving his money. 23 years old with chronic pain in the knee and ankle is not a good thing. Sounds like a 33 year old NFL player.

  • I assume he just can't apologize for "his actions" during the trial?

  • I'm trying to remember what game it was and I think it was against Detroit last season, but I saw Ro miss more tackles in one game than his entire career at UA. It was a bad, bad day. I still believe he can get it done. He's as smart as anyone out there, he's just got to stay focused and healthy and put it all together. For Ro's sake I hope he stays out of Decator, Alabama forever.

  • Man, I hope Ro gets his act together. He worked so hard to better himself, would be a shame to waste it now.

    Will the Raiders cut McClain?

    11:54AM ET

Though he was sentenced to 180 days in jail during his first trial involving an incident from last November, Rolando McClain's legal situation hasn't been resolved yet. His lawyer has indicated that the next step is a jury trial, and he expects a different result. As the conversation percolates over whether McClain will miss any playing time in 2012, the Alabama product joined his teammates as the Raiders' OTA sessions began on Monday.

However, in the opinion of Tim Kawakami of the Bay Area News Group, McClain shouldn't get too comfortable in his silver and black outfits.

"McClain's actions and his spotty play so far have shown that he's the polar opposite of the kinds of players [GM Reggie] McKenzie and [HC Dennis] Allen want in their locker room, and McClain should be gone from this team before the start of the 2012 season," Kawakami declares. "Maybe it'll happen in training camp, when the Raiders know they have replacements ready to go. Maybe it'll happen before that. Somewhere in there, unless this incident immediately sets McClain on a clean new path -- and there is evidence of this -- McClain should be an ex-Raider."

Of course, if McClain is out, who will be taking over the starting MLB slot for Oakland? The Raiders have Aaron Curry slotted in as the starting WLB, and while he could line up in the middle in a pinch, he's not a very good permanent solution there. Currently behind McClain on the MLB depth is seventh-round pick Nathan Stupar, though that's a tough spot in which to put a rookie.

The best course of action -- should they actually cut McClain -- is in free agency. The cream of the current ILB crop consists of James Farrior and E.J. Henderson, but this is a position where some good players can be found once teams begin making cuts during the preseason.

  • About as unapologetic of an apology as it could have been. Seems to be placing blame in other directions. Only reason his problems were minimal at UA was because of who was in control. This guy has always had a history of bad behavior. His uncle stayed on his butt continuously growing up. He always feared rolando would end up in jail or dead.

  • I don't think this is going to end well unless he gets to a more structured organization than Oakland and that my not help w/o personal intervention.

Wish people would stop saying nonsense like this. He got in trouble while home attending his grandfather's funeral. Does he need to play for a team that doesn't let players attend funerals? Maybe make them wear ankle bracelets when they leave the training facility? This is 100% on Ro, there's no "lack of structure" in Oakland or anywhere else to blame for it.

It didn't happen in Oakland, it happened in Alabama. The Raiders are in no way responsible for Ro's actions off the field, especially when he's across country.

    Aaron Curry?

Damn Seattle, talk about cutting your losses quickly. Didn't he get more gauranteed money than any non-QB rookie ever?
