  • Why now? Why is everyone just NOW beginning to buy into the NCAA ineptitude/abuse of power?

    USC is why.

  • Well, the ncaa is really a mess right now, but it has been for, what?, the past 25 years? Coach Bryant would have moved
to eliminate the ncaa back in the early 80's and succeeded in gutting it, had he lived another few years. Coach Bryant was
right then and this sordid excuse needs to be finished off and something better brought forth to replace it. It is and always
has been a corrupt, incompetent, useless organization that promises hoity-toity crapola, but only produces crapola.....

  • It's hilarious because the NCAA's model is....

"Well one of the country clerks embezzled some funds....let's punish the entire town 99.9% of whom didn't do anything"

Now they have an issue where there is very clearly a lack of oversight based on their rationale. I would normally have sympathy for that because it's impossible to prevent and oversee everything, but I don't have sympathy in this case due to the NCAA's ridiculously self-righteous attitude about everything.

    Will be interesting to see.

So if the reasoning is sucks for you didn't catch in time wouldn't that almost require the NCAA to do stuff like they did in the Miami case to catch cheaters...I have no problem with Penn State as an institution being penalized for past transgressions...so with your reasoning nothing should have been done to Penn State other than stipulate that those currently in positions at the University be fired? I don't think the NCAA has that kind of jurisdiction...Im not defending the NCAA by any stretch of the imagination, it's just how does any oversight organization with not much legal authority try to herd the cats...

And again with respect to PSU, if I had to listen to one more moron try to make it a "societal issue" or some other nonsense I was going to lose it. They kept yapping incessantly about how the problem was bigger and bigger and bigger than anything you could imagine. Is its PSU's fault for liking the football team too much, well that's basically a "problem" in all college football, well then all of college sports, well how about all sports, how about all walks of life, literally everything the entire world, hell the universe. WE all molested the kids if you think about it. What can we learn from this?

No, you morons, it's the fault of the guy who molested those kids and the fault of the other guys that covered it up. Everything else was complete and utter nonsense.

That's life dude. Look at Jefferson County. Some crooked politicians, crooked bankers, and crooked banks stole a bunch of money. Can't get it out of the politicians, can't get it from the bankers, won't get it from the banks so they punish the residents who had nothing to do with it by charging absurd sewer rates.

Not the same thing at all. Haha. The county doesn't have any money because they made stupid decisions with crooked politicians and bankers and went bankrupt but that's completely different. The federal government didn't decide to cut off education funding to Jefferson Country because of it. There is a difference between the absence of a magic wand to get you out of trouble and a willful and punitive punishment allocated to unrelated people.

A better example would the Government cutting off Medicare payments to millions of beneficiaries because one hospital administrator was fraudulent but of course this never happens. Your comparison is not accurate.

  • This iteration of NCAA Enforcement is not needed by college football. There was a time when it was a valuable organization, but in its current state, it is more problem than solution.

  • The thing about the NCAA is that it's a smokescreen. It needs the schools, but by and large the schools don't need it. When it first started, they knew they were basically asking people to take orders without any leverage. It gained some de facto influence when they managed to convince everybody not to play Kentucky in the 50s and ever since then it's just sort of wormed its way into an altogether perplexing position of authority. The entire SEC could tell Emmert to screw himself tomorrow and he couldn't do a damn thing about it.

In any case, its policies have gone from invasive to over-the-top. Revisionist history is a joke - we all know Penn State won 9 games last year and we all know Reggie Bush won the Heisman. That it's applied in such a sweeping fashion is even more ridiculous. I can understand vacating the school's wins from the textbook scandal, but Saban had no control over it, knew nothing about it, benched the players as soon as he heard, and deserves those five wins.

What kills me is how indescribably hypocritical they are. They preach endlessly about "student athletes" and "amateurism" and "integrity", and then they deprive kids of the chance at a college education because of a guy who started talking to an agent. A guy who is currently making millions playing in the NFL. He and his coach get off scot free, but there are several kids this year, likely from low-income, urban areas, who won't be going to college, and you can thank the NCAA for that.

Don't even get me started on how many people are screwed by the scholarship restrictions - for all the crying about our signing tons of kids, people like to ignore that those kids got a free college education. The "integrity of the student athlete" facade is a joke. The NCAA doesn't care about any of that. What it cares about is forcibly imparting parity and imposing its will. Now, it's meddling in criminal matters and it's doing it based on what we now know to be a highly suspect report. Even if the Freeh report's conclusions are correct, none of the sanctions are going to hurt Sandusky, or Curley, or anybody actually involved. Everybody affected by this is innocent.

Needless to say, I hope the state of Pennsylvania bends the NCAA over and has its way. I wish UM would get in on the action too. The entire current NCAA administration needs to go.
