Saban comment on scholly #s this year

  • At last night's Crimson Caravan in Birmingham, Saban covered a LOT of ground. Most of it has been well recapped here, including Chris's article.

One nugget that I found intriguing that I haven't seen discussed is when he was talking about the small upcoming senior class. He said it would be 8-9 players, with "a few" that would go to the draft early. He concluded by saying that will mean they "MAY be able to take 20 new scholarships" in this next signing class. Words directly from the Oracle himself.

The means less than 10 open slots left. Less than I would have thought, but good to know.

In other comments, Blake Sims is the backup QB should AJ get hurt. He said they would adjust the offense around his running ability and that he throws "pretty good." It was clear that the coaches wouldn't be thrilled about our prospects if that came to pass.

  • I'm trying to place the top recruits we want into the remaining slots, and it gets tight quickly.

Plus, with P Sims leaving, anyone think they could look at a JUCO QB as well?

No, I don't think so, unless we can land a super stud with unbelievable talent.

  • Thx!

    Bama Illinois

  • - We will take more than 20

    - Pretty scary when a guy who has played the majority of his career at RB is your 2nd string QB. I'm starting o think we might not have the BEST QB depth int he country afterall.

not without Phillip. With Sims we were in great shape.

Can you tell me what team wouldn't be screwed if they were down to playing their 3rd QB? When PS was here we had a much better than average second string guy. Now we don't. Nobody can just absorb their 2nd guy leaving and their starter going down, I don't care who it is.

No, because i have already done it like 400 times.

  • Ely would develop and be just as good as Gmac in time. settle down guys. yes it would be a blow but we would adjust.
Saban has never signed just 20 players, it may happen but I highly doubt it

No you haven't because those teams don't exist.

If the massive QB thread still exists, look in there. Weedline put together a pretty exhaustive list of teams who he thought were deeper at QB.

Ely, as much as I hate to say it, is a perennial 3rd or 4th string QB.

The list was not very convincing. Mccarron/Sims was as good as any starter back up situation in the country. With Sims out of the equation Alabama is like most other teams. One snap away from a big step down in talent at QB. What team in the top 10 believes they can win big if their starter goes down? I would argue that Alabama is better prepared for that situation given its style of play even without Sims as the back up.

I curious what makes you think this. Do you think that Saban is just throwing a smoke screen? I'm having trouble coming up with a reason to believe message board posters over The Man, himself. No offense intended.

I was also one of the only people on BOL who believed Nick Saban would become Bama's HC in 2006. Same old ED. You should try to think positive in life sometimes and stop sitting in front of your computer trying to pick arguments and spread misery.

Saban said it in Birmingham last night. Weedline is correct. We have a shaky situation at QB right now.

Nah, no need to look it up when common sense tells you nobody's 3rd string QB is any good. They don't get any reps and they're 3rd string for a reason.

Saban is probably not gonna step up to the mike and state that he will process the hell out of some kids who aren't cutting it and that you can expect him to sign the max every year. He'll probably just keep that to himself.
