What team in the top 10 believes they can win big if their starter goes down? I would argue that Alabama is better prepared for that situation given its style of play even without Sims as the back up.

Remember, Alabama's "style of play" included 2,634 passing yards, 16 TD's and only 5 interception (out of 328 attempts) on the season. Although I actually do enjoy your enthusiasm from time to time for Alabama to conquer all regardless the obstacles at hand, I would never say they are "better" prepared for this situation without Sims as the back up (not today's Alabama). You said you would argue that, but in my honest opinion, you shouldn't.

With TR3 in our rear view mirrors, Lacy having the longest ongoing case of turf toe known to man (not really, just seems like it) and only a stable of "we think they cans" left over, I fully expect the leash to be removed from Mr. McCarron in 2012. Sure, we have a lot of talent that the backup will have to aid him in his transition (IF it were to happen), but just how many of those 328 pass attempts can we take away and still win? My guess is not many....and that is where the dream ends and reality begins.

To add to this, the thing that concerns me is Saban saying we would have to alter the offense some to fit around Blake Sims. That kind of does away with the thought of us being better prepared because we are not just simply plugging another body in at QB.

I was also one of the only people on BOL who believed Nick Saban would become Bama's HC in 2006. Same old ED. You should try to think positive in life sometimes and stop sitting in front of your computer trying to pick arguments and spread misery.

Did I argue or did you? All I said is the truth.

Saban is probably not gonna step up to the mike and state that he will process the hell out of some kids who aren't cutting it and that you can expect him to sign the max every year. He'll probably just keep that to himself.

So you think that he brought this up, giving a specific number, without prompting, so that he could lie to an entire room full of people that have no vested interest in what he says about the number?

    Really?

I'm going to posit an alternate theory - that right now he expects them to take around 20. The evidence for this is:
    1) There are only 8-9 seniors on the team
    2) Saban said it.
    3) See #2.

Sure, it could change. But disagreeing with something Saban JUST SAID about the a decision that he alone gets to decide makes one look like they have issues with "facts".

Can you tell me what team wouldn't be screwed if they were down to playing their 3rd QB? When PS was here we had a much better than average second string guy. Now we don't. Nobody can just absorb their 2nd guy leaving and their starter going down, I don't care who it is.

Now, Blake Sims isn't our 3rd string guy. Phillip Sims transferred. I understand your poibnt but the fact remains Blake Sims isn't our 3rd best guy on the rister right now. He is 2nd.

  • I think Blake's true spot will really depend on his ability to bounce back from that injury, so Ely is prob the backup right now.

The thing everyone seems to be overlooking is Morris coming in this year. I know he wasn't the star recruit we all wanted last year but at 6'4" 220+ he's already got the build and coach Nuss seemed to be extremely impressed with him.

Ideally it'll be a moot point and AJ dominates this year on the road to ANOTHER title!

  • Whatever occurs in regard to the QB situation will not have caught the staff off guard. They cannot obviously dictate what school a kid chooses, but they can prep for multiple possible scenarios (and they have) because the Sims situation was not a shock. I heard directly from mcelwain that they were fairly certain Sims was planning on transferring in the near future, so prep for that situation has undoubtedly been ongoing for a period of time now.

Also, with the ability and expertise our staff possesses in the area of prospect evaluation, if they were in desperation mode over the QB position, don't you think they'd risk 1 scholly on the top flight group of QB's that they evaluated on film prior to them camping here this summer, especially since it was undoubtedly common knowledge to
them that several of their presumable targets in that scenario were eyeing on early commitments (and have now committed prior to our camp dates)? I think that we would have a commitment from one of them already if this scenario was indeed the case.

Now, Am I a bit anxious? No doubt; that's human nature. But am I extremely worried? No. Consider this: many of us could devise a solid plan(s) for remedying this problem now if given, for the sake of the argument, until this Sunday, if provided with adequate resources and free time. Now consider what our group of coaches, with their experience and expertise, could/are/will be doing with a time period of +\- 1 year, with limitless funds, time, resources etc and whose job is predicated on the outcome of crucial decisions identical to this one?

Did they plan to be in this situation? No. Are they capable of fixing it quickly enough to where our production at the quarterback position doesn't skip a beat? Yes, beyond a shadow of a doubt.

I get it - you are going with the lying hypothesis. That's cool.

It requires odd interpretations, twisting/ignoring facts, taking quotes out of context, and assuming that Saban spends time thinking about how to mess with you. But I've learned not to argue with people who think they are the center of a conspiracy.

I'll go with the simple version. Occam's Razor.

Ely, as much as I hate to say it, is a perennial 3rd or 4th string QB.

We all said the exact same thing about gmac. In fact my most knowledgable friends said he was "horrible" after the spring game in 07. Let's chill on the qb panic fest

I never said that about GMAC and I don't know people that did either. It's not panic to admit Ely is being passed on the depth chart by a player that has played running back the last two seasons.

So you think we can take a guy who is currently playing running back and equal the production of AJ? A guy who Saban himself said we would have to alter our offense to help make him more productive?

Not at all. My post was intended to address the QB situation from this recruiting class forward (since the title of the thread addresses the scholarship # issue) but I guess I failed to specify. Perhaps I didn't make my point clear enough.

I most certainly agree that, were AJ injured, we would be hindered on offense significantly (see: the Bronco offense last year with Tebow at QB for my guess as to what our offense would try to emulate schematically).

Having said that, I do believe that Alec Morris is a guy that our staff is optimistic about, and that the staff feels he could be "the guy"... but would they be willing to trust him to be the starter in, say, game 8 of this season? I don't have an answer to that & neither do they, at least definitively, prior to fall camp.

Haha, I'm with you now. I'm optimistic about AM too but like most not entirely sure what to, or even what should be, expected from him in year 1. We'll save that one for another thread though.
