Saban suggests no-huddle offenses are bad for football

  • I think the no huddle is fine, if it works for team x, y, and z. At the end of the day or game clock it is about the W or the L. If the no huddle gets you the W on a consistent basis then why not run with it. I don't think this no huddle is anything new to the NCAA. It's new for Ole Miss, and I thought it was a decent strategy to try and slow down our substitution of our incredible depth on D. Our depth is an asset and teams will try and mitigate it as best they can because of their own lack of depth. The reality is the no huddle can be mitigated as well through better preparation and study. I like the extra demension of the no huddle offense. Just one more thing you have to prepare for which in turn makes you better. JMHO. RTR

Saban on no-huddle offenses lighting up scoreboards: “Is this what we want football to be?”

He questions whether the increased difficulty in substituting players is bad for player safety.

I defeinitely agree with his sentiment, but Saban is hardly a non-partisan source for a quote on this subject. No huddle offenses go against everything he believes an offense should be. As you can see by our results under Saban, the offense is there to setup the defense. Balanced, long drives are preferrable to quick scoring strikes and fast paced offense.

  • At some point a defense will figure a way to minimize the tempo. We may be getting a taste of it when a defender gets cramps on every other play. And I mean some serious cramps.

It's a natural consequence of the growing disparity between the haves and have nots in college football.

If anything the disparity has shrunk between the two in the last 30 years

If you are not Alabama however I can see why teams with lesser talent run it. I completely agree with Coach however as I get bored with 70-63 games and teams who don't know how to play defense.

Agree. If you don't have the talent you have to "invent" ways to try and level the playing field. However I can see CNS point & personally would love to see the "no-huddle" abolished. I don't like seeing 70-63 unless I'm watching basketball or playing xbox.

my biggest problem with it is when they run up to the line but then stand up and get the call from sideline. If they run a true hurry up and snap it quick - well that is what it is. I can see why that would be used to save time etc. BUT I have always said that if the team stands up to get the new play the official should stand over the ball and allow a sub.

These teams are now doing this and still using the full playclock and 'huddling' at the line...which is just cheap.

This exactly. If you want to use a no huddle hurry up offense, then please... hurry up. Its lame when they go to the line to just limit substitutions and then stand around for a play call.

Other than that, I have no problem with it all other than the fact that I don't like it from a personal opinion standpoint.

  • I read something the other day about changing rules to help the defense (can't remember where) but the best suggestion and one that would perhaps impact the spread of no huddle is strict enforcement fo the illegal motion rules - would stop what some on this board have called the "meerkat" offensive sets - you are either set or not as a QB or other postions.

Agree or disagree the only thing that matters is winning. Teams will use it if they believe it gives them an advantage

    Exactly

    RMFT81

  • I cant stand that Oregon fast paced O, it reminds me of arena football, but I can understand why teams do it to gain an advantage. I think one way to stop it is to start laying players out!!, just hit them do hard that they can't get up!!, take out a QB or 2 and a RB and WR and that will slow them down. Personally, i think you should be able to run subs in on every play, except perhaps in last 2 minutes or something like that. They run that offense for ONE reason, because they can't match up with our depth or talent, so they try and keep as much of our players off the field. One of the keys to slowing down this type of O is to limit their gains on first and second downs, keep them third and long. These offenses do not survive when constantly faced with 3rd and long situations. It's based on successful early down gains with hopes of long gains, busted plays and short 3rd downs. They know it is futile to play smash mouth football with us right now. I really think that's why Urban left UF, because CNS had figured out how to stop the spread. He will figure out how to slow this arena type football down. If you look at the NFL I dont think anyone runs this gimmick offense consistently and there is a reason for it.

    Darth Tider

  • He's totally right with player safety aspect. The margin of the game was 7 points. The game would have been won at the same rate at 7-0 without defenses and offenses running down the field 19 times. That is 19x more prone to injury by kickoffs etc given the amount of opportunities. I can't stand a team that can't play defense regardless of how many points they score. They are one dimensional and it inflates offensive numbers to a point to where they are meaningless yards and points.

    The Truth67011

  • The NFL is partly to blame also. Billion dollar business. Has decided to slant the rules towards the qb's & wr's. In order to put more people in the stands. You know offense sells tickets. But defense wins championship's.
