Saban's Tuesday morning press conference

  • They're about to make everything official and give Alabama a bunch of trophies at the annual morning-after press conference.

Don't know about Saban, but I'm going on just about no sleep.

    BCS Coaches' Trophy (Crystal football)

National Football Foundation (MacArthur Bowl Trophy)
The Grantland Rice National Championship (Football Writers Association) Trophy

(Alabama's sixth MacAuthur, most of anyone)

  • Saban opens with "Great honor for us and the University of Alabama to accept on behalf of the entire team"

Very proud of the organization, and the togetherness of the team.

First question: Did you relish this one a little more? I think I did. This was a special team, and not to say the 2009 team wasn't, but this team had the characteristics that you strive for. I feel privileged to be a part of it.

But we're losing a lot of players ...

  • Gatorade bath - I enjoyed it two years ago - I wasn't expecting it and almost got knocked about. The players improved on their ability to deliver. I improved on the ability to accept. Except Tom Rinaldi - who got some of it. I tol him to send me the bill.

  • Most challenging years, you really have to have something special not to be satisfied with what you accomplished. We want everyone to remember what it took, but it's a little tougher when you've been successful.

  • Our team played a great game last night, but Kirby Smart did an outstanding job making adjustments. I hope everyone realizes what he and the other coaches have contributed.

Close to heading to the lake?
A: What do you think. When a guy jumps offsides with three minutes to go and you're still coaching like it's the first game of the season ... Saban says the fire is still strongly burning.

I think about the only thing that's changed it winning the game is not enough. Doing it the right way and setting an example to help players be more successful in life, which includes serving other people -- which this team really did, I'm probably as proud of winning the Disney Spirit Award as anything.

There were some players who didn't get to enjoy this, and I sort of feel like we failed them.

  • Update on Mosley - Think he's ok, dislocated hip, put back in, X-rays ok, need an MRI when they get home. If no bone chips or fragments will be Ok in about six weeks.

Trent Richardson had as good a football season as anyone I've ever had the opportunity to coach in what he accomplished, but probably more important to his teammates is the way he did it.

"I look forward to that every day."

  • Having AJ more in the offense, they wanted to do that more in the first game. You have to trust the players and you can't always protect them. AJ sort of proved that last night. My statement was if we don't do it we can't win. Jim McElwain sort of felt the same way.

I want everyone to know, I'm not conservative. But we learned that we needed to do that the first game.

  • How are you a better coach than you were 10 years ago.

More knowledge and experience over the years it's become more about other people and less about me, or whatever. I think that's improved our ability to affect other people.

A lot of people contribute to the development of our players.

I almost fainted when he said that last line .... So has Jim-Mc been the uber conservative this whole time???

  • Awesome stuff! Damn we r ombudsmen right now!
    Saban is superman!

  • Legacy of the defense - Kirby deserves a tremendous amount of credit with what he did with this defense - people give me more credit than I deserve because I'm a defense coach, but he's the one who plans and implements things. What this defense accomplished statistically speaks for itself, but I love competitors and these guys are warriors.

When they go to play, they play hard and play together, and have a lot of pride.

Press conference finishes up. We'll have a notebook tonight.

Being conservative isn't the opposite of being wide open. We are nearly 50/50 which doesn't make you conservative either. We finished with a top 15 O in the nation in scoring.

That is not conservative. Smart. Because we don't turn the ball over. But not conservative.
