Safety play

  • The reason we lost this game is the same reason we almost lost the LSU game. Robert Lester and Vinnie Sunseri can't cover anybody, and for some unknown reason are always matched against one of the opposing teams better players. Thank god we didn't have Nick Perry still out there or this would've been a bloodbath. Bottom line we will continue to be burned on 3rd down if Milliner isn't covering their best reciever, Belue on their 2nd best reciever, Haha on 3rd, Fulton on 4th, etc... May be time to get Landon and Geno some more PT as they are at least physically capable of man to man coverage.

  • Not the reason we lost but safety play leaves a lot to be desired. They benched #27 three games too late because he is awful, but left #3 out there. He is horrible against the pass, needs to play LB against the spread teams. # 6 has a LONG way to go. No Mark Barron type out there for sure.

  • Our secondary was a concern at season beginning and we now see why. They will get better but we have to have some guys on the bench that could cover better than we have last two weeks. Of course not having a pass rushed kills us.

  • agree,Lester and Sunseri were bad in coverage,we need some playmakers there,we fought so hard to sign Landon Collins,give him a chance and throw him in there,can't be any worse

  • Yeah sunseri is out of position a lot and our secondary is go.na have to het ready for the rest of the year because they will be picked on.

  • i agree,seems like we take alot of bad angles to the ball. just watch the wheel route to 25. lester and vinnie take bad angles.

  • The safeties were the biggest problem. Sunseri has gotten exposed last 2games in pass coverage and Lester played a poor game. The key to playing teams like that is tackling and we have not done that well the last 2 games. All that being said defense played well enough to win. If we come out and score 10 points those 1st 2 drives in the 2nd half we win. Offense has completely lost rhythm.

  • what makes LSU great on d is our weakness, no pass rush and we lack speed on every level of the defense. you need speed and a pass rush to contain a offense like the one we faced.

  • Somewhere, Aaron Murray is super excited after watching the last two games. And Chip Kelly is begging to go against Bama's defense. As of now, our D intimidates no one.

    I agree that we should have scored more in this game. We have heard all year about AL having the best OL in college football and yet at the end of the game the coaching staff seemed to have no confidence in their ability to play "smash mouth" football. All of the praise for o line continues even though they struggle in pass protection. I think a lot of fans, myself included were yelling at the tv "just run the damn ball" until they show they can stop the run.

    Aaron Murray is not all that ( Good QB,not great ).I hope we do play ND,if we don't make it to the BCSNC game.Notre Dame is the weekest of the top teams.

    Me too, but it would never happen unless ND bets beat. The Fiesta picks both teams and the Rose picks one before the Sugar picks Bama's opponent. An undefeated #3 ND would almost certainly be picked by the Fiesta bowl.

    obiously coach saban and smart know secondary play about a million times better than me. with that said, and western carolina and aubbie the next two games, it does seem like it would be a good time to play Collins and Geno and some others with talent that just lack experience to give them some needed experience. that experience and the practice time before the bowl would br great development time.

  • I think Lester was trying to be everywhere at once to cover for Vinnie. Lester is usually pretty good in coverage. Vinnie and HaHa were out of position alot. Vinnie seems to be the weak link in pass coverage, I would argue even more so than Perry. The difference being Vinnie is a better tackler. HaHa will be great just have to let him get a little more experience. Safety play is our biggest issue right now. Although Fulton has had his share of problems too.

  • Show me a safety that can play a slot receiver & I'll show you a guy that couldnt play corner. Hard to play safety when they've legislated Ronnie Lott type intimidation out of the game. See HaHa's helmet to helmet penalty for example & tell me that didn't effect him when he could've knocked out #25 on the wheel route. BTW, DM will be a top 10 pick in the draft and he was beaten on that corner route from the slot.

  • Lester and Sunseri are good safeties when in zone coverage providing over the top help and run support. But when teams spread us out that's when you need some speedy corners to come in to play man and we just don't have them yet and the reason Saban is trying to address this in this recruiting class. I would expect many of the athletes in this class will get a strong look at corner first. Geno was in the game early but he is just not ready yet. It takes way more than natural ability to step on the field in this defense. Lot of mental which Lester and Sunseri have just not the physical ability to play tight man with the receivers that A&M or Oregon put on the field.

    I've been saying this for years. So what if we are bigger. If we can't catch & punish people when they get the ball. We need a speed upgrade at lb & secondary.
