Sammy Watkins got baptized today

  • Wait...if it's between him & God then why are there articles &/or video footage of it?

Assuming that's what the link in this thread means as I haven't clicked on it.

  • Instead of finding negativity. Why not be happy for the young man? Only 2 people know a persons heart. That's the person and God. RTR

  • If it is a result of John 3:3, then He just made the most important decision of his life.

Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God."

When it comes to stuff like that I think it is pretty dangerous to say for certain that someone is faking it. If he really did get right with the Lord then I most definitely don't want to be the one to say he didn't. Let's just wait it out and see if his behavior changes.

For once in my life I totally agree with you.

Means nothing if he is not living it... Let's hope he is living it..

So as to cut off a sanctimony contest before it gets too out of hand, please allow me to show you what the Word of God says about faith and works:

Ephesians 2:4-9: But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

James 2:18: But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”

This morning, Sammy displayed his faith and works in front of God and the church congregation. Since you are calling his actions into question, how do your own works of the day compare to his? Care to boast?

  • Sammie made a mistake here recently that resulted in one of the things he loves most being taken from him. He has been humbled. Like most teenagers, up until his arrest and subsequent suspension, he probably thought he was invincible. Well, he quickly learned that no matter how fast he can run, how well he can catch, or how hard he is to cover on an out and up, if he is not living his life right, then it call all be taken from him in the blink of an eye. To me, it appears that he has learned his lesson, accepted that he is neither perfect nor invincible, and has changed his life. That's one thing I don't question. I will pray for Mr. Watkins and and rejoice in the fact he and friends have decided to accept Christ.

Quite honestly, this should be celebrated. Too often, we only talk about these kids when they are either scoring touchdowns or getting into trouble. This is an opportunity to celebrate two kids outside of those things. I, for one, am happy to see it and hopefully they will inspire others.

ahhh,,, "Since you are calling his actions into question" ...what are you talking about.

not the forum for this discussion.. lol,,, but read all of James or read all of James 2... gives plenty examples of what he is talking about... But glad you provided scriptures to read...

But anyway, not the forum for this discussion.

I find it humorous that you didn't consider it necessary to say, "not the forum for this discussion," when you were making this bogus statement about Sammy's salvation: "means nothing if he is not living it." The scripture I shared refutes it, out right. If our respective salvation depends on our living a sin-free life, nobody would make the cut. Your suggestion that Sammy might not, "live it" equates to calling the actions of his life into question and is absolutely judgmental and sanctimonious.

Calm down... sigh... who said sin-free? no need to answer. We all know there has only been one. The reason I said not this forum is because this conversation can be taken in many directions and some directions me not be good. So an in depth conversation may not be best on a sports forum.

But i will bite for a second

refutes - no,,, not at all . I am not sure what you are refuting.(striving to live like Christ).... But the bible says, "There is no God" --- If you don't read the full statement, you may not completely understand what is being said... The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” . You can use isolated scriptures to prove a lot things that contradict God's message... Satan did it with Jesus... I am not calling you satan

But if the goal of your post is to convince me that someone can be baptized (immersed in water), live Galatians 5: 19 -21 and be cool... or I should disregard many other scriptures to call Christians/me to follow Christ/carry cross or live as Jesus did, (even though the bible says we will all fall short, which I am happy and grateful to be saved by grace).. Save your typing.

But I appreciate your zeal.. (not condescending)

  • Ahh yes, I should've expected all the bible thumpers to get on my case for that post, but just to clarify a couple of things...

The PR stunt I was referring to was mostly talking about Dabo taking the whole team to church, not Sammy Watkins getting baptized. If he had gotten baptized on his own, without the fanfare of Dabo and his team going there, then I would be much less skeptical. It just seems like odd timing since Dabo has been suffering through bad press from the whole Nkemdiche fiasco, not to mention Watkins getting suspended in the first place. What better way to counter all that bad press than to play up the Christian card?

Lastly, you can quote all the bible scriptures you want, but getting dunked in water doesn't mean anything if you're not out there living a good life and affecting people in a positive manner.

Not flaming you, but when I played in college our head coach took us all to church as team the first Sunday of camp as well. Perhaps Watkins wanted to do this with his teammates looking on. Most people who get baptized invite the people they're close with to attend. I'm just throwing out other possibilities that could have been going on. Roll Tide.

Found it interesting, Sammy Watkins and Malliciah Goodman got baptized today. Dabo took the whole team to church to support the guys.

Clearly Auburn didn't recruit them or this would have already occurred . . .
