Saturday's Softball College World Series thread

  • Ok, found an NCAA record book.

They don't list a record for pitches thrown in a game.

However, the record for innings is 25—Shawn Andaya, Texas A&M (1) vs. Cal Poly Pomona
    (0) (25 inn.), 5-24-84.

    • The record for innings pitched in a College World Series: 60.0—Taryne Mowatt, Arizona, 2007.

She also had the most strikeouts with 75.

      • Holy cow (pin intended) - Baylor did it again.

Walk-off home run in the 13th innings. This time (Holly) Holl. It's her second home run of the season.

Two runs in the tournament and the Bears are in the semifinals.

            • Unbelieveable. Two runs. Two walk-offs. Two wins. Both in extra innings. Now in the semis. Crazy.

                • Found this when I was looking for different softball records

Bleacher Bits: A softball game for the record books

                  By Craig Purcell/Tri-County Newspapers
The sports reporters for Tri-County Newspapers log quite a few hours at baseball and softball diamonds.

In doing so, we get the opportunity to see some great pitching duels as well as some well-executed offense. We've been treated to some out-of-this-world defensive plays, and quite a few records have fallen this season due to the athletic prowess of area teams and individuals.

On the flip side, we have also sat through some games between teams that were not evenly matched, resulting in the blowouts that we expected on our way to our assignments.

But all three of us could combine our "worst game of the year" stories, and the result would still pale in comparison to a recent contest in San Luis Obispo County on California's Central Coast.

If there was a sports reporter for the local paper assigned to cover this one, I'd like to recommend him both for a raise and a few days off.

Yahoo Sports on Wednesday reported on a Tuesday softball game between Cuyama Valley and Coast Union high schools, which Cuyama Valley pulled out with a 13-run seventh inning for a 48-47 win.

The 95 total runs set a national record for most runs scored in a game, and the teams played the regulation seven innings in the nearly four-hour marathon.

I can envision the local reporter, hoping to get home in time for a warm dinner, repeatedly looking down at his watch as the game dragged on. With each base on balls — and there were plenty — his stomach would growl its displeasure.

As he reaches into his trusty camera bag for yet another pen, as two have already gone dry from over-use, he shakes his head in bewilderment at the prospect of needing to decipher his notes and the filled-up pages of his scorebook in order to write a story.

When he sits down in front of his computer and begins to write, he must choose the "significant" stats to include in his story. He could use the fact that Cuyama Valley's pitcher earned a win despite allowing 47 runs on 21 hits. There's the Coast Union pitchers issuing 36 bases on balls, throwing 25 wild pitches and hitting 12 batters.

But my favorite — one of Cuyama Valley's batters came to the plate and walked all nine times, officially going 0-for-0 at the plate.

There are good days and some not so good to be a sports reporter, but after looking at this, I guess it can always get worse.
