Should UCLA lose on purpose this weekend?

  • UCLA's only hope to get a BCS bowl bid is to win the Pac 12 championship and play in the Rose Bowl. If they beat Stanford this weekend, then they would have to play in Eugene against an Oregon team with a powerful offense. If they lose, then they would play Stanford again. I think UCLA would much rather play at Stanford in the Pac 12 championship than having to play at Oregon. They would lose millions of revenue if they don't play in the Rose Bowl, so should they lose on purpose this weekend?

  • Wow....that'd definitely a tough situation. As a coach, I think my team can beat anyone and def plan on winning this weekend and next @ UO.

    Yes you cannot intentionally lose a game...when your players don't play fast and with purpose you get injuries...you play the game and let the results happen...

    Why would you involve the players?

    If, in this little fantasy, I was a college president and wanted to lose a game for the OPs reasoning, I would just go straight to the coach. I bet a game would not be so tough to throw from a coaching standpoint. Calling easily defended offensive plays as well as calling poor defensive plays would be pretty simple if one so chose.

    You certainly can't tell your players to lose but I think you could potentially mismanage the game intentionally with stupid play calling and poor formations without the players knowing. Either way, would not be good for your team long term.

  • UCLA has to win Saturday just to get in the game. If they lose, their not going to the the conference title game, unless Oregon State beats Oregon.

  • They are going to lose to Stanford twice.
    Does anyone know if this has ever happened before in D1/FBS Football? Two teams playing on consecutive weekends...the second counting a lot more than the first. Craziness!

    Oregon is easily the better team. One game does not a season make. They were just better on Saturday. I think A&M is a great team and they beat us, but I don't think they're better.

    It says here UCLA has clinched the Pac12-South outright.

    Stanford > Oregon

    In all honesty, Stanford should be a 1-loss team right now and in the title discussion. That "loss" to Notre Dame was bs. The running game of Stanford is stout. They've got a promising young QB and stout defense.

    Oregon got beat by the only quality team they've faced. My guess is Oregon State takes them down up in Corvallis.

  • With the way money is affecting the college game at this point, this question isn't that farfetched as it seems unfortunately.

    On that topic, I'm really looking forward to renewing that most heated of rivalries--Iowa and Maryland--when the Terps move to the Big 10.

    I'm not saying that. I do think Stanford is a better MATCHUP against UCLA than Oregon is. UCLA runs a spread, up tempo offense, and that does not match up well against Oregon. You don't want to get into a high scoring game with the Ducks. Stanford runs a ball control ground game on offense and their defense is tough enough to match up with Oregon well. I don't think UCLA's defense matches up as well against Oregon.

    That wouldn't be necessary. Just play your 2nd string and rest your starters for the Pac 12 championship game. UCLA has nothing to gain by winning or losing this weekend. Their only path to a BCS bowl game is to win the Pac 12 championship, and I'm sure they would prefer to play Stanford over Oregon. UCLA matches up better against Stanford than they would against Oregon.
