So I am sitting in Beef's last night....

  • Eating with my family. I overhear a couple of FSU fans talking about signing day. They were struggling to remember the complete names of their recruits, getting projected positions wrong along with players home states and generally hacking their way through the conversation. Much to the disappointment of my wife, I had to step in and clarify some things about their own class. An example of this would be EG's home state..... they had him living in Kentucky.

After my brief conversation with them I began to wonder if, as a everyday fan, I was too versed in the recruitment process. If as a Alabama fan I know that much more about another teams class than some of their own fanbase, should I worry about being too informed?? Does anyone else follow it like that who is not getting paid to do so??

Honestly I get most of my info from what you guys are posting and looking st the recruiting tracker. I think a lot if you all on here do a great job of keeping the rest of is informed. We are a different breed so I never expect other fan bases to be as knowledgeable

We all pay money for this site to be well informed. Some people enjoy playing golf, some go to concerts, some hump cows(barners) we choose to love recruiting. Its amazing seeing guys perform in the NFL when you have been watching them play football since they were a junior in high school. So I look at being informed as another hobby. And when your head coach is Nick Saban recruiting is fun to keep up with. I always enjoy watching people who are the best at what they do.

That is me. I am connected to nobody currently at the University. I know some who used to be there. All my information comes from this board and the other 247 sites. Wondering of I need to take a break :)

Yeah this is me...only people I currently know at the University are friends of friends so I get most/all of my info on here. And yet I'll have aubies, noles and other fans/alumni in my office come to me for info about their teams and I can usually answer them with what I've learned on here, lol.

  • Don't worry man. You have a hobby that most of us have...following recruiting. I live in the Northwest and people really look at you funny when you know the details of recruiting classes. I remember when Oregon was in on an Alabama recruit, although I cannot remember which one, and I was able to tell them several things about the recruit. The Oregon fan was shocked. Just go look at the number of people on any Alabama football message board that requires a subscription and compare it to other schools. Outside of Kentucky Basketball, you would be hard pressed to find a more feverish/knowledgable fanbase.

  • i honestly dont care if people look at me and say "oh you are obsessed with recruiting and alabama football" ..i really like the info here and getting to know recruits brings a fan to appreciate what is on the field..not just a team but each player also! I like watching a game and have knowledge of the players on the team including backups and future players! Thats a true fan imo! People who dont watch recruiting or look into the players on the team and cant name half of the starters...thats not a fan imo

I know what you mean. I will catch myself and shut my mouth to keep from coming across as a know-it-all arrogant bastard. Living in Florida I am caught in the middle of a lot of UF/FSU conversations. Inevitably one of them will insert incorrect information (about their own team) and I will tactfully correct their mistakes.

I remember talking to a supposed UGA fan and right away I could tell he was lost. To clarify, I asked him to give me the names of his starting QB, RB and safety. He could not. While he was in mid-sentence I turned and walked away. Refusing to continue. Much to his credit, he returned the next and gave me all three.

  • Currently living and raising my family in Tallahassee, I have seen the FSU fan base go sour several times. When they are not winning they do not support their team very well. For the last 2 months or so it's been all basketball, now since signing the #2 class all i hear is "we were young last year, and now with this great class we are back"! Lose 1 game and the fingers go pointing, blaming refs. They win ugly and rag refs. Truth of the matter is most of the 25-45 yr old generation had become spoiled with the domination FSU implied in the 90's (yes, hard to admit but they were DOMINATE). That now they think with 1-2 good recruiting classes they are back. One word: DEVELOPMENT. FSU does not seem to develop their players anymore, they just let the god giving talent do what it does. EXAMPLE: G. Reid/Dre K - ranked #1 & #2 CB per Rivals that year. Dre=probable 1st rd draft pick. G. Reid=couple good punt returns for TD's, but got blistered several times per game. Nigel Bradham (#2ILB)
5 star physical specimen, but where's his chatter?? I have been telling FSU fans that they have been recruiting good claases (in the top 10) for several upon several years now, so its not the talent, its the development. But they refuse to believe it. Very arroigant fan base. They are the #1 reason why I will always claim the state of Alabama, and the mighty Crimson Tide my HOME! I might have moved to Florida as an early teen, but my roots will always be buried in Blount/Jefferson County AL. Roll Tide Roll!!

I am sitting on the F$U campus right now and it all boils down to the fact that fsu fans dont know ANYTHING about college football, including their own university. Just ask any fsu fan that you meet to name a single head football coach at their own university other than Bobby or Jimbo. Really, try it some time its quite funny (10 times out of 10 they cant do it). As I have said before, fsu fans talk non stop during the off season about how awsome they are and how many great recruits they sign, but when football starts its a whole different story. My boss just asked me to ride up to po boys for some brews but I have decided to stay at work on a friday afternoon so I dont have to listen to his fsu buddies talk their retarded, delusional talk. No joke, I decided to stay at work rather than to hang out, brew, and listen to their statements uninformed comments. If i decide to go I will post quotes so you can see how truly pathetic these "fans" are. These people are clueless, even the "informed" ones. Rant over, I am now going to walk around campus for a while, while they are dumb, very dumb, the chicks are pretty easy on the eyes. Roll Tide

  • I had a similar experience about a month ago sitting at a table next to a Barner and an Alabama fan discussing recruiting and football in general. It took a lot for me not to butt into their conversation to correct them many times. 247 and rivals subscribers and always going to be the most informed fans because we pay attention and know the details. After being on these boards for a couple of years it kinda annoys me all the "huge" Alabama/AU/UGA/FSU/etc.. fans that really have no clue what's going on with their football team.

We're just more dedicated fans and want to know what's going on with our team and around cfb.

True story...had a date with a girl out here in Califonia a few months ago right before Bama-LSU part 1. We discussed Bama football because she was a Bama grad in the TV reporting business here in Sacramento. She actually traveled everywhere the team played for 3 years including 2009. She was an intern at the local either CBS or Fox affiliate in T'town. I want to say CBS but I might have that detail wrong. She was very knowledgable about Bama football in general but she had many details wrong in our conversation and I couldn't help myself either. I thought to myself after i left that lunch date that I know way too much about this shiat. We never went out again but a cool girl.

  • Can't compare the average fan of any team's knowledge in most instances to those fans that go the extra mile and sign up to recruiting sites.

I know plenty of FSU fans where I work who belong to recruiting sites and they are pretty knowledgable about their recruiting news. I've been talking to them off and on for 2 or 3 weeks and overall they have been able to keep up with the conversation. Now thats not to say they aren't sometimes biased and overly optimistic about their own team.

As posters stated above some FSU fans can be irritating by still considering themselves a power house and indeed became spoiled to some degree from the 90's. I find Barners way more irritating.

Didn't realize there were so many Bama fans from Tally signed up here. Cool.
