AaronSuttles Aaron Suttles Darius Philon signed his letter of intent for Alabama.

    So that's a '12 offer then, right?

Can't sign an LOI if you don't have one to sign until December, unless I'm reading into things the wrong way.

Love how quick people were to jump on our staff. Is it too much to ask to give the guys running our program a little more trust, in that they're being honest with everything they say & honoring their commitments, no matter how our rivals & the media want to spin it?

For all those thinking we did something "shady" -- what would be wrong with telling philon he might have to grayshirt when he committed, and then telling him a couple days ago that he indeed had to. What the heck is wrong with that?

Thats what happend? Or are you just saying that cause thats what you wanted to happen? It doesn't matter now he signed

Philon announces for Alabama....still waiting to see if there are other circumstances in play.

    Excellent! Thanks, Shane.

Yep. God forbid we do the right thing.

If you want higher rated kids, then don't take his committment in the first place (not saying that is what happened here).

Honoring your word used to mean something.

Exactly. And if you start doing it with in state kids you don't know what bridges you may burn with hs coaches. I know kids flip at the last minute but these are kids. Adults should operate at a higher level.

wow guys, relax. Give me a break. Even if he did go elsewhere, just relax

And once again....people jump head first into an empty pool. This mess about bad publicity etc is really getting old. It happens at EVERY damn school. If CNS could get a signature when a kid commits, then problem settled. Our coaches do the best damn job they can of feeling out these kids and buying their commitment. If a kid seems flaky, u have to gamble sometimes.

I wish someone would do a piece on the difficulty of recruiting. Laugh if u want, but the Barn is a prime example of what waiting will do to you.

I don't know that it happened, but I would assume so. There is at least as much evidence for this scenario as we pulled a out of nowhere bait-and-switch at the last second. But these people that jump to conclusions that our staff has done something unethical have bought in to the media's inaccurate portrayal of imaginary oversigning controversies, and it gets on my nerves.

Has CNS not earned every benefit of the doubt?

Yeah I totally buy that. I'm talking more to those that immediately start acting like we told the kid he couldn't sign.

I was just saying just because he has hesitation doesn't mean that we definitely told him he doesn't have a spot.

Yup - he probably sees we sign Kirven and Tomlinson this morning - has a good offer from a top-10 SEC school and had doubts. I would too if I were an 18 year old who wants to play football ASAP.

When it comes to CNS doing something the right way? Do I assume that?

    You're goddamn right I do.

  • Philon is not going to sign with Alabama today. He will apparently take a greyshirt and enroll at Alabama in January - that is unless an academic casualty opens up a spot for him which could still happen (still have a couple with academic issues).

Philon was fine with this option for a few weeks and then Arkansas and a few other schools gave him something to think about. He decided to stay with Alabama.

That's not how it happened with J. Taylor. We let him know a couple weeks before signing day. So I would say, no, he hasn't earned every benefit of the doubt b/c he has already done it in the last 2 weeks.

Let me say that I'm not for or against it. But to act like Saban is on the up and up about everything is waaaaayyyyy off base.

And THIS is evidence #1 that you guys who jump to conclusions that Coach Saban is screwing over a kid need to stop being alarmist and start getting comfortable that you can trust our coach. Where do you get the gumption to question this man at this point? WTF?

I don't know the ins and outs of the JTaylor situation, and neither do you. I am willing to be that his offer had the condition of grayshirting. He didnt have to take it, he could have kept looking, whatever he wanted to do. Plus we gave him a couple of weeks BEFORE national signing day (the beginning of the signing period, not the end) to explore other options if he wanted.

What's with your eagerness to assume the worst of CNS? I just don't get it.

  • Ill just say this about grayshirting....if it is explained from the jump.....like when a recruit first tries to commit then I am ok with it. However, if a kid commits in June and isn't informed of a possible grayshirt or a gray shirt until December/January.....well I have an issue with it from an ethical standpoint. I don't care who the coach is or what school happens to be doing it. I don't care if the kid was injured or not either. There used to be a time a committment was honored. If someone changes the rules to the game midway through then it isnt right. Period.

And just because the kid ends up signing with the team that offered the grayshirt doesn't make it ethically/morally OK. It doesn't excuse the behavior IMO. I mean....kids could just want to go to a specific school so bad they will swallow their pride in this situation. However, deep down I guarantee you they would want to enroll with their class if given the option.

B/c it isn't right!!! You tell someone something for 9 months and just b/c you have something better you crap on them!!!

This is the second time in as many weeks.

I understand it is a business. And CNS is doing what is best for the program. But none of tthat makes it right.

Shane - As a greyshirt, will he count in this year's team rankings?
