Spring practice report #5

Alabama continues to try numerous players in different spots, especially defensively, trying to find the right combinations as the first full week of spring practice concluded

  • I love how our staff puts emphasis on players learning multiple positions, it ebables the personnel on the field adapt to a quick offensive package change without subbing, huge advantage, not to mention it makes our guys that much more appealing to NFL scouts! this staff is the best in the business....rtr

  • BTW, Holtz was wearing a Masters hat and an Alabama wind jacket. No, it did not burst into flames.

Ah that would have been a good pic. Not the bursting into flames part.

Does this mean we should expect a commitment sometime soon?

I could not read his comments with out hearing his "spitting slur" in my head.

  • I know that everyone gives Holtz a hard time for the way he talks, but if you've ever heard him do one of his motivational speeches, there aren't too many that are better. He makes a whole lot of money doing his speaking engagements.

I saw him when I was on a recruiting trip to USCe. He did about a 20-30 minute speech about taking the tools that are given to you and creating something beautiful utilizing those tools. At the beginning of the speech, he showed the crowd a single piece of plain paper by stating, "Even if all you have is this little piece of paper, you can create something wonderful." He went on for 20 minutes or so and would look down occasionally. At the end of the speech, he held up the same piece of paper and had created a butterfly thing w/ the paper and stated (paraphrased), "Not everyone can create something beautiful, but everyone has tools and opportunity."

I guess people that like to make fun of him just like to make fun of people with disabilities to make themselves feel better. Not sure why else it would be.

I agree with everything else you said.

  • He was the featured speaker for a company meeting we had in the '80's while he was still at Arkansas. He was a very, very good motivational speaker. That memory allows me to overlook his occasional bout of homerism when talking of Arky, USCe and Notre Dame.

  • Chris, what is your take on the development of Danny Woodson, Jr? I don't see many comments about him, but he looks like a specimen, and I know what he was able to do against prep talent. I also know you could say that about a bunch of guys who never really caught on.
