Staff: Regarding Numbers Crunch

  • We're at 26. Belue makes 27. What if Goldman, Jenkins, and Winston ALL want in? That puts us at 30 and means 5 have to be back-counters/January enrollees right?

I know CNS and staff have it all worked out, but it sure is interesting.....

  • Offer greyshirts to some of the 3* commits to get to the number...grades could also be another determining factor on who gets passed by or set up at a JC

  • Staff who are the guys that we can backcount for the last time? And who are the guys that still have work to do with grades? And anyone already been told they will gray shirt? Tia.

  • If we get Goldman, Jenkins, & Winston , Then thats also assuming that Belue and Gladney get their grades to make 30 .

Dixon already enrolled and I am sure 2 of the other EE will be back counters since we could count 3 .

That only leaves only 27. You know a couple dont make the grades

  • I hear you guys and appreciate the input. Maybe I'm wrong, but I was under the impression under the SEC's new 25 rule that there would be no more grayshirting and that if you signed a kid, whether he qualifies or not, he goes against your 25 limit, making it a bigger risk than in the past. I thought that was what caused the criticism.

  • Bama will sign 28 in this class (back counting 3 from last season). Two more recruits in this class. Winston will not be in those numbers. Just the facts.

  • Any early enrollee can be back counted provided you signed less than 25 the previous year. We know that Dixion, Belue, Cooper, Black and a couple of others are going to enroll early. If there aren't any qualifying problems, a couple of players will have to grayshirt. We only signed 22 last year leaving at least 3 vacancies. Also, Aaron Douglas was one of the 22 signees and we all know what happened with him. Don't know but this may be a possibility of another backcount since he was only in school a couple of months. However, that will be an NCAA issue that would have to be approved. I am sure Coach has a plan and all will be fine. RTR on a great night. Lets get Jenkins, Goldman and maybe Winston and call it a great year.

  • IMO we have a grade casualty and sign Goldman and Belue but lose out on Jenkins, signing 27.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the 25 scholly limit an SEC rule not an NCAA rule?

You are correct. But other than Dixon and possibly Belue, no one has signed yet. You have to manage your numbers to 25 + backcounters (three in our case) before they sign (not at the time of a verbal pledge).

So, as an example, if you thought you had a WR that wasn't going to make his grades, you tell him that he isn't on the track to eligibility that both he and we expected him to be on when we gave and he verbally accepted a conditional offer, and since the conditions aren't met, the offer isn't valid, but that we would love to add him to the 2013 class if he has met those conditions by then and is still available.

He may choose to do that or he may choose to go somewhere else if he is condfidant that he can make up the academic ground in time. You can call that a greyshirt or not, but it isn't a signature and a scholarship offer on Feb 1, and his future isn't in limbo depending on who else we sign or who else makes their grades. He has a firm offer for the next class if he waits, otherwise he is free to move.
