Statement after Wednesday's BCS meetings

  • “We made progress in our meeting today to discuss the future of college football’s post-season. We
are approaching consensus on many issues, and we recognize there are also several issues that
require additional conversations at both the commissioner and university president levels.

“We are determined to build upon our successes and create a structure that further grows the sport
while protecting the regular season. We also value the bowl tradition and recognize the many
    benefits it brings to student-athletes.

“We have more work to do and more discussions to have with our presidents, who are the parties
that will make the final decisions about the future structure of college football’s post-season.”

  • "We realize that the Have nots want to Have. They WANT to have Championships, and they WANT to have popular programs that consistently fill their (yet to be built) 100,000 seat arenas, and want to compete with the best (read: the SEC). But, because this is impossible...

...we feel it to be in the best interest of college football that we, in the shadow of it's highest popularity EVER, do NOT "FIX what ain't broken" and we will RETAIN the current BCS system without making any changes. After closer examination, we find that the kneejerk reaction to last year's championship was simply a bunch of whiney "have nots" who had nothing else better to do, or pseudo-CFB fans (mostly NFL types who aren't truly CFB fans) who want to have another betting venue that would come about with a playoff. Neither of these are valid reasons to change. We fully realize that there is NO NEED for an "additional" playoff at the end of the season. In fact, we already have a 12-14 game playoff every year, from August to January, and it, more often than not, sorts out which team is the National Champion better than any committee with agendas could ever do before each year is done."

    Meetings are concluded.

    Signed:

All the Presidents of the REAL schools in CFB, and the Commish's of the SEC and the Big 12.

I see room for failure from trying to give the modern college football fans what they "want" when they might not have the perspective to see the big picture. I am glad they sem to be moving cautiously. I love college football season, I don't want to lose that.
