Statement made from today's BCS meetings

  • “As part of our deliberations, we have carefully considered a number of concepts concerning the post-season structure for the BCS. From the start, we set out to protect college football’s unique regular season which we see as the best regular season in sports. We are also mindful of the bowl tradition and seek to create a structure that continues to reward student-athletes with meaningful bowl appearances.

“Having carefully reviewed calendars and schedules, we believe that either an 8-team or a 16-team playoff would diminish the regular season and harm the bowls. College football’s regular season is too important to diminish and we do not believe it’s in the best interest of student-athletes, fans, or alumni to harm the regular season.

“Accordingly, as we proceed to review our options for improving the post-season, we have taken off the table both an 8-team and a 16-team playoff.

“We will continue to meet and review the exact structure for what a new post-season could look like. We are making substantial progress. We will present to our conferences a very small number of four-team options, each of which could be carried out in a number of ways.

“We have discussed in detail the advantages and disadvantages of in-bowl or out-of-bowl games.
We have discussed in detail the advantages and disadvantages of campus sites or neutral sites. We have discussed in detail the advantages and disadvantages of various ways to rank or qualify teams.

“Our process is proceeding as we have planned and we look forward to further conversations.”

  • IMO still wont fix the over analyzing and controversy. JMHO. the 5th and 6th ranked schools will still feel snubbed. Adding the extra SEC schools now make our schedules harder and further more we now have to play an additional championship game.

  • Further more if an SEC school goes undefeated wins Conference championship, 1st round playoff, and plays for national championship that will make 15 games played in a college season. IMO not good.

  • Are we talking potentially 16 games: 12 regular season, SEC Championship , BCS Bowl game, 2 Playoff games. 15 games: the first playoff game instead of the bowl game?

you have to draw the line somewhere

i am so happy they eliminated these 2 scenarios. that would be a travesty to have that big of a playoff

i am a fan of the +1 system, or at most, a 4 team playoff (pretty much what the +1 is anyway)

keep the bowls, maybe restructure how the top 4 teams get into bowls, and then let them play one more

  • Just ban Bama from playing in the BCS and all the other conferences would be happy with the current setup. swirl

Yep. It will be good for years with three solid undefeated teams (which is rare), but nobody will really be satisfied because the people who beat the drum loudest for playoffs are looking for ways for their scrub school to win a championship, and that won't happen without a 32 team playoff or something equally absurd.

  • On the other hand it will help SEC schools possibly get in with 1 maybe even 2 losses. Which under the current system everyone raises heck about.

  • 15 games. BCS bowl game sites would be used for the playoff games

I just saw on ESPNU that they are considering keeping the Pac-12/Big Ten Rose Bowl in place. Why should those conference champions get "special treatment"? Am I missing something here?

  • Honestly, if you change to the 4 team playoff, then the SEC Championship Game should really be eliminated. There is no reason to play an extra game and potentially knock one or both teams out of a potential final four berth. If every conference had a championship game it would be different but they don't.

Also, as much as I hate to admit it, I think you have to play the semi-final round on campus. The cost of potentially going to back to back neutral site games would be very large for both teams and the fans. UA lost money playing in both BCS championship games. The travel expenses for the team and band was well over the SEC payout we got after the bowl money was divided up. Now, your talking about potentially having to do it twice back to back weeks. Thats going to cost some serious cash. Also, the money it will cost the fans to travel to 2 neutral site games will be outrageous. Hell, the average face value ticket to the UA-Mich game in Dallas is $300, Pasadena was $200, and NOLA was $350. Add that with travel and hotel expenses and fans are looking at a few thousand dollars per person to make it to both final 4 games if they are both at a neutral site.

  • going to be interesting to see how this all plays out...

  • Going to be funny as hell if there is 2 undefeated or one loss PAC 12 or Big X (or whatever their number) teams that can fight for a national championship and they get left out b/c their attempts to block 2 SEC
    teams

  • Just know that while we are not going to see an 8 or 16 team playoff this year we will in the near future. Every NCAA sport that has a postseason tournament has expanded that tournament from where it originally began and college football will be no different. They will see that they make $2 billion off of a four team playoff and imagine they can make more than that off of an 8 team playoff, which IMO is the where the number should be.

  • I can see the regular season going back to being just 11 games.

  • Here is what I see playing out: the SEC will want the four highest ranked teams on the BCS to make the four team playoff. Other conferences will probably want the four highest ranked conference champions to get in which obviosly would have prevented us and LSU from being in the championship last year. This is just conjecture but I could definately see this being a point of contention.
