Stony Brook, Kent State and St. John's in Super Regionals...

  • ...is this indicative of 11.7 scholarships bringing parity to college baseball or an indictment of programs like Alabama this season?

  • I'm not sure I completely understand the question. I think there is some parity, but I'm not sure where teams like Alabama come in. Alabama was a horrible team this year, but there are horrible teams every year.

Specifically, does the "no lottery" argument for schools like UA and Auburn hold as much water when schools like Stony Brook are advancing to Super Regionals?

I think the 11.7 thing is a problem. But it had nothing to do with Alabama this year. We were crappy and we were going to be crappy no matter how many extra scholarships we had.

But I do think that scholarship thing makes a difference over the long haul. I also thing it makes a difference between having a good team and a great team in many cases. I would have loved to have a couple extra scholarships for relievers or another starter a few years back.

As for the regional results, that is a pretty small sample size of winning a regional. Anything can happen in those cases because it is a short season in a regional. Btw, I was looking up something the day about who was in the tourny. But as far as NCAA appearances, St. John's ranks 3rd all time in regards to this year's field with 35 or so. Tops was FSU and I can't recall who was 2nd (maybe Stanford). As for SB and Kent, I have no idea about their history.

I think you have to be careful about making declarations about big picture arguments based on one weekend.

The no lottery argument holds some water. One thing the University could do to give us a better chance would be to allow out-of-state tuition waivers for the players we are recruiting. Much of the SEC does this. You combine that with many states having a lottery, and is it any wonder other people's 11.7 is going further than ours?

There are plenty of issues that the university could address to put this baseball program on better footing, even with the 11.7 issue.

  • Just started another post that is related to this but my point is the fact that I feel like the NCAA should increase the scholarship numbers across the board for college baseball. The states that have "Hope" type scholarships have a clear competitive advantage and that definitely hurts Bama.

    Agree with all of that.

Lottery based scholarship do hurt programs like Alabama, but how much did they help Kent State, Stony Brook and St. John's this year? It's an advantage, no doubt, so it should be apparent to all involved that UA has to be strong in every other aspect of it's program to be in the mix on a consistent basis. That's not the case right now.

No doubt the day you see a new facility for the baseball program will be a huge step in the right direction!
