Style Points

  • If we want a rematch, then we'll have to stay in the thick of the BCS conversation. To do that, we're going to need some luck with OU beating OSU and Oregon beating Stanford. Even then, we'll have to have some impressive showings from here on out in order to convince the voter's that we deserve a shot over Boise, Oklahoma, and so on.

Considering that is the case, we are going to have to go for style points in the remaining three games. No more running the ball up the middle in order to run down the clock with 8 minutes to go. I know Saban doesn't like going after style points, but he's going to have to take a page out of Bob Stoops playbook for the rest of the season. If we want to keep any hope alive for playing for a title, then its going to have to be pedal to the medal in every game. No holding back. Throw class out the window because this is business now.

Since we now probably won't play in the SECCG, the last impression we will leave with the voters is the Auburn game. If there has ever been a year where we need to beat Auburn by 50, then this it it.

That's true. We need to slaughter our last 3 opponents. I'm talking 56-7 type beat downs for style points. However, if OSU and Stanford both lose I think we have a pretty good chance at a rematch if we win out.

Even if LSU wins out you think? Stanford has to beat Oregon and Notre Dame. Oklahoma State has to best Oklahoma. I think both teams are likely to lose, the problem will be the media's contention that it is unfair to LSU (which is probably is) to have to play us again when they beat us at home. Now if Arkansas were to somehow beat those guys, we are back in the drivers seat.

The only thing I'm counting on is the national media not wanting to put an undefeated Boise in the national championship game. If everyone else has one loss and we win out fairly convincingly I think there will be a pretty good argument for a rematch.

Granted, that's a lot of ifs...

Haha. That would SUCK for LSU though I think you might be right.

  • There is only one thing we can control right now and that is our team and our games. So we have to maximize that to its fullest. I'm not kidding when I say that we need to score 50+ on AU.

It sucks for LSU if we were to play in a rematch but I'm an Alabama fan and I want was is best for my team, not what is fair. So I'm all for a rematch right now.

Maybe it sucks for LSU, maybe it doesn't. I don't know what will happen if LSU plays Boise, Stanford, or OSU. I may think that I know, but I really don't.

What I do know is this: The Alabama team I saw last night can't beat LSU on a neutral field...not without making some significant changes and improvements. I hope those changes and improvements get made so we can have a chance if we get a rematch. Improvements in the kicking game, the QB play, the playcalling, the OL play, and yes, even the defense and running game. Their running game should not get more yards and YPC against our defense than ours did against theirs.

I think we could beat them but its hard to argue your points. I at least want to be in position to attempt to have a second chance.

We could have easily won by over 10 points last night so know I don't agree with that at all. Our running game was better last night than their running game. They had zero success between the tackles.

  • That game could have gone either way last night, and we had more success than they did but didn't capitalize. Everybody that watched the game knows that. To say we can't beat them is beyond absurd. We should have beat them last night.

If you want to talk box score, tell me what team had more total yards, more yards per play, more first downs. And if you want to use last night to say their running game is better than ours contrary to popular opinion, well then anybody who said their passing game was better than ours is equally wrong.

None of that changes the fact that we have serious flaws in our game which prevented us from winning the game. Those will have to be rectified if we are to beat them. Sure...we should have beaten them, but we didn't...because our kicking game sucks, our clock management and endgame philosophy sucked, and our QB play committed fatal mistakes. We will not beat them next time unless those areas of weakness improve.

    airharper

  • It really wouldn't be fair to LSU if we got a rematch. I could see it if we lost in OT in their place but they came to our house and beat us. Imagine if we went to BR beat LSU and then had to beat them again on a neutral field. Bad precedent IMO

  • LSU out rushed us 148-96. That's also two years in a row now they've won the rushing battle. & they won both games.

Yet if we improved none of those things and Chapman just didn't block an irrelevant LSU player in the back, we would have won. The game was simply not as one sided or as concrete as you make out. In games like that with two great teams sometimes you have to have a bit of luck and it could go either way. This time it went their way. You can look at every stat possible and you can't say they outplayed us. Sure there are things that we could improve on and we our obviously not perfect. Neither is LSU. They could have easily lost the game and be complaining today about how they can't run the ball between the tackles or get anything at all going in the passing game. Those are things they probably need to try and fix as well next time they play us.

  • This is the kind of things I want to talk about on this board now. Plus +1 to you all.

(nevermind read the rest of the thread and saw the negativity again. They out rushed us because of quarterback scrambles and the option game. That is definitely something we can improve on handling.)

  • A qb who can run is something we need to get used to. A qb who can run is an extension of the running game. We will likely only see more of these type of qb's in the future. College football is becoming more & more of an athlete's type of game. We need to be able to adapt to what's going on imo.

True but I don't think they caused us a lot of problems at all. We did fine against their option game. They scored six points in regulation. The beat us in special teams obviously and our ridiculous stalling out about 10 yards from Alabama FG range (which coincidentally is about 10 yards closer than every other team in the nation).

  • Just stating what we all know. Team with the most rushing yards wins almost every time.

Again I don't really agree with that but I don't want to argue with you. They ran the option for three quarters without any real threat of a passing game. By that rationale teams like Gtech would never lose and teams like Arkansas and Oklahoma State would never win. I personally prefer a balanced offense.

  • fair or not, I really believe the rematch happens. My biggest worry is Stanford.....the 3 remaining games for them are Oregon, Cal and Notre Dame then the Pac 12 champ game. Oklahoma St plays at Texas Tech, at Iowa st and Oklahoma.I really see the stars aligning for the rematch and from what I've seen in the media, they want it too! BUT, we have to take care of business and win out to make the rematch possible. Not about to cancel my New Orleans reservations yet!!!

I'm mostly talking about Bama dude. We're built as a running football team. How many times has a team out rushed us but we still won the game under Saban? That's they key to the way our team is built.

  • We definately need to run up the score. LSU beat State 19-6. We need to beat them like 35-3. But like someone said, that's not Saban's nature. He gets a lead and goes conservative. Can't do that during these 3 games remaining.

If Saban does that, then he and he alone is to blame for us letting #14 slip away. Now is not the time for class, getting the reserves quality PT, or being conservative. For the next three games, nobody needs to be within 35 points of us.
