Summary of why we lost

  • A lost of posts here listing different reasons but most are hitting the same points...

** Obviously, we don't have a good kicker. We haven't had one all season but our strong points have made up for it (we haven't even been able to kick the ball in the endzone on kickoffs, something that a lot of lousy teams can do). At some point during a close game this was going to be a problem. Tonight was that game. A lot of people think we should've punted it and played field position instead of kicking the ball but, at some point, you've got to be able to make a field goal if you want to win a close football game.

** There were some minor execution issues on offense. McCarron misses an open Brandon Gibson on third down. Kenny Bell has a touchdown pass just out of his reach. Maze trips and falls on a reverse without an LSU player touching him. Not to mention a substitution penalty in overtime. McCarron didn't play terrible but didn't set the world on fire either. Richardson played hard, didn't fumble, and probably should've gotten the ball more at the end. Jim McElwaine didn't call his best game.

** An Iffy call on Michael Williams reception/interception. I really think this could've gone either way b/c there wasn't going to be enough evidence to overturn the call on the field. Unfortunately, it went against us. That said, one can certainly make a case that a trick play was unnecessary at that point in the game with Richardson gaining so much on the previous run.

** A hobbled Maze is sent out to field a punt, which he doesn't fair catch and costs us thirty plus yards. I love Saban but he has a tendency to play first stringers too much when their hurt (see Barron in iron Bowl). Christion Jones handled two punts without any issue and probably should've been the one out there during this one.

** We still have an excellent coach and a great staff. Our defense is elite and possibly even better than the 2009 version. Our players are top notch and, who knows, if Oregon and OU win, we could find ourselves in a rematch with LSU. That said, we have some real issues on special teams that need to be addressed for us to win a close game like this. Just my take...

Disagree with FG. With the best defense in the nation, you punt and get the ball back at the 50. Doesn't make any sense knowing limitations of our kickers.

  • The offensive issues turned out to be major in this game. They can be minor against a team like UT. But against a team like LSU they become major imo.

  • Good post "impact". The long fg kicker has knocked many kicks through from 40+, in scrimmages and games! Now, putting in the short fg kicker to try one that long was a mistake, imo. Saban knew points were so valuable that I think it affected his judgement with the short fg kickers try. Should have punted on that one. Maybe we find a kicker before next yrs game!

  • How about, "Just pound the ball." Eventually, Trent will bust it. I can't take it when we try to get too cute.

    I agree.

I would add "suspect offensive play calling, especially on 1st downs at times" as part of the reason. There's plenty of blame to go ALL around for this one...

  • Maze was quoted saying the punt hit the CBS camera wire which threw it off line.

  • LSU would not have won without JJ who should have been in jail, not playing football for soccer kicking an unconscious marine in the head. Les Miles knew that LSU could not win without him. Then he changes the rules to let his potheads back for the game, one who karate chopped Dre and put him out of the game. The better team did not win last night.

I could say a lot but all I really need is one example of why McElwain frustrates me so bad. In OT we passed the ball 3 times when McArron looked very rattled. Where was Trent? He is our Heisman candidate?.....LSU was tired, smaller, and we have 3 huge RB's ready to pound them! RUN THE DAMN BALL! I am SO ready for someone else to call plays.
