  • I was talking to a friend yesterday who is very connected to North Carolina State. He is claiming there are discussions being held about the possibility of them joining the SEC. I would doubt he is lying about it, has anybody heard anything about this?

I hope not, I wish they would kick aTm and Mizzo to the curb now.

  • If the conference ever expands to 16 teams, NC State would make a lot of sense.

    phyllis618

  • I would bet they at NC State are discussing it internally. I would also bet there is zero chance that the SEC is seriously considering them in any way.

  • doubt we go any further past 14 teams

  • I really can't see that happening; I went to undergrad school at UNC and that "tobacco road" grouping of UNC, NC St, Wake and Duke is very very entrenched in the culture.

Makes sense, but I think they would rather have the virginia schools. SEC will look to add at least one virginia school. Wouldn't mind a UVa and NCST, but would prefer Va Tech and UNC

Va Tech and NC State make much more sense from a cultural perspective.

UNC would be OK, but they, Duke and UVA might think they're "lowering" themselves to join the SEC. Not saying I agree with that, but if you thought Mizzou coming was an academic crapstorm, those others would be worse.

I think Clemson, VTech, and NC State would be good additions from the east.

Don't see FSU doing it and Miami might also have similar academic concerns on their own end being a private school.

The whole idea that schools should concern yourselves with the academic reputation of the other schools that you play sports against is unbelievably retarded. Not a shot at you because you are dead right on the mentality of the arrogant, self-righteous dipshits we call academic administrators but it’s just so frustrating that the mentality is so amazingly stupid.

I am a Vandy grad, and if you think I or anybody else at Vandy should give a rat’s ass that we sometimes play sports against a lower academic school like MSU you are kidding yourself. In terms of endowment per student, we are top three of BCS schools and in terms of federal research grants per student I think we are tops.

The fact that the SEC allows us to invest marginally in athletics only to collect in an equal revenue sharing conference is hilarious. And they do it because they are championing the absurd idea that the academic reputation of the teams you play sports against is important. It’s not. Nobody cares! Probably the only one that matters is the Ivy League and that's a historical distinction that's quite frankly outdated.

  • The sec will expand to 16. It may take 10 years, but it will happen.

Right - I think it works both ways, which is stupid.

The "elitist" schools think they're too good for what they believe to be a bunch of uneducated neanderthals. While the schools with good football programs don't want to be brought down by a bunch of bookworms, which is equally stupid.

The academic schools would bring value to the conference for perception as much as anything, and the football aspect would help the private schools make more money to improve their shatty athletic programs.

It won't take 10 years and yes, the SEC is going to 16 teams. The two schools I believe that have been targeted are NC St. and Va Tech. Folks, this aint new and there won't be a Va law that stops it. Remember, the reason for the Va/Va Tech package deal before was because Tech was going to get left out. Not the case this time -- it will be much like A&M and Texas.
