TRips: Friday morning thoughts

Alabama's latest would've-should've-could've title win; riffing with Redmill and a few other thoughts and observations on a Friday morning ...

  • Thoughts on our game against A&M on Saturday?

  • Feel better about it after watching A&M get destroyed at home by UF last night. Aggies coming off quick turnaround and should be a good crowd at Coleman.

  • As a good friend, in-the-know, told me yesterday, with Andrew Steele in the Tide
hoops line-up, we are 8-1. Interesting. RTR!

  • Travis. Thanks for writting what you did in regards to simply giving credit or accepting the fact that a very good football team beat you, was better prepared, executed better, and your team simply didn't lose it because of the host of items provided. I like out chances as you did to win if both sides play equally as well...the facts are, on paper and on the field Alabama was simply the better team.

Agree...but to me that is the biggest problem in today's world. Nobody wants to just tip the cap to the other guy. They gotta always make excuses to make it look better for them some how.

It doesn't always show up in the stats, but he's important for a number of reasons. Brings some toughness to the floor and competes. That said, need scoring from Randolph and Jacobs like they got Wednesday night.

I've seen plenty of Bama fans blame the A&M loss on having to play such an emotional game against LSU the previous week, so it works both ways.

  • ths is an awesome feature TR. Thanks to Griff for the insights.

The OL is tough to predict - i think Arie is maybe the best physical mauler on the team and may fill in nicely. and oddly enough Kelly brings some of the same things that Barrett did physically. He needs to keep drinking the shakes tho.

Brandon Greene looks like a guard to me, as does Lutua, Lindsay, and Gulledge. So I'm hoping Sheperd, Leon Brown, or Brandon Hill can play RT. The bodies are there, its just who can play.

are you of the opinion that our defense will be a huge factor this year, and hopefully will be better than in 2012?

They always say you win Championships with your defense. I dare say we won this one with a great offense

  • It's promising with Jacobs only because it shows that he can do it even without ANY other legitimate post player to stop him. I mean, MSU has nobody in the paint to defend and they have no talent either on the court. I'm happy with his performance the other night but I wanna see it against non-intramural post players. But, he's gotta start somewhere, mind as well be now. How about some Levi love lately..he's starting to come around.

  • Great article, Travis. The only complaint I would make is with regards to the line, "I've got a special seat for you -- right along side the Sandy Hook conspiracy theorists." Whether or not you believe our government is above that kind of thing or not, there's evidence both ways. I'm not trying to start anything. That's just my opinion. RTR

TR...very funny stuff...I would have thought the same thing last weekend against UT but there were plenty of empties in Coleman. Maybe its just early but the SEC looks very weak this year so maybe we do have a chance to win 20 games.

I actually take conspiracies on a case by case basis. But I tend not to buy ones that trivialize the murders of 26 people. That's just me, though.

Agree on State's post players and wrote as much earlier in the week. That said, who other than UF and UK has strong bigs in the league this year? Not expecting 16 and 11 every night, but he should be able to give more than he has to date.

The defense will probably have the same questions to answer going into the season as it had this season, starting with the secondary. The nose tackle position is obviously a big one, too. I think the pass rush will be better though.

agree..he has been terrible this year. he has regressed from last year. he has an amazing hook shot, but thats it. he has zero defense and toughness, cant rebound the ball

on a bad night he should still at least grab 5 or 6 boards

I understand where you are coming from. It's a very sensitive subject. The information I've heard, however, does not trivialize the murders; it simply shows that perhaps the blame was not squarely on the shoulders of one man.

  • Needed the last 2 wins badly hoops. Surprisingly, if we play like we did pre-VCU meltdown, we could on a run and be sitting at 14-1/13-2 in league play heading into our loss in Gainesville.

Amazingly enough, if the team has truly left its bad play behind them and returned to their pre-VCU form, a 15-3 conference record is very attainable. Only 2 more guaranteed L's on the schedule in our trips to Gainesville & Oxford(which are back-to-back, but that and the @Mizzou opener are the only 2 tough parts of our SEC schedule) and they're games 16&17 on the slate.

  • Good article Travis. Not getting overly excited about a blow out win over a very mediocre SEC basketball team. Let's string together some wins and then beat a competent team and that will increase my confidence in this team.

I am curious, you state that you feel we will have some of the same concerns next year in our defense and list, particulary, the secondary and NT. I understand the secondary with us losing Miliner. However, I was really impressed with the improvement in Ivory and think Lake's best days are ahead of him (although I do understand he still has growing to do). Is your restraint at the NT position tied to experienced depth (Lake did play but he was third string therefore his opportunities were commensurate with that status) or do you feel that our concerns are tied to the entire depth chart?

Thanks in advance Travis for your response.

I think Ivory and Lake are capable, but it's not the given that it was going from Cody to Chapman to Williams. Should be fine for what they need them to do.
