TRips: Three Monday thoughts

If this season represented the child rearing years of a coach's tenure, Anthony Grant hopes the adolescence era of UA basketball under his watch is over.

  • Good stuff Travis. I think that while this team may miss Green's stroke on the post, they won't miss his immaturity at times. I appreciate the things the kid accomplished while he was here...but you could almost see the immaturity in his game at times. It led to a lot of turnovers and bad on-court decisions, and sadly I think that's more what he'll be remembered for....plays like a missed box out on a one and one.

jacobs is not as well rounded, but his power post game is far superior to greens IMO at this point. he just needs to be better defensively and develop a face up shot

When he was right, the guy was a double-double machine. He developed a nice 17-footer over the last few years but I don't think his post skills got much better. I didn't really agree with Clark Kellog's repeated assertion in the Creighton game that the offense needed to run through Green. Often times, especially late in the season, if Green got a touch, that was the end of the possession. The guy's a talent, no doubt, and he should have a solid pro career.

Yep, post defense and continued strength and conditioning need to be the topic of Jacobs' "How I spent my summer" paper in August. The hook is a nice foundation that he can build upon.

I would agree with your assessment of Jacobs, and I think if he were to develop a move to his left shoulder he would become even more difficult to defend as well. Saw a couple of teams really overplay him to his right shoulder this year and he wasn't sure how to attack them.

I think he's been more like a 1 mil guy until this contract. He's had a really nice career and had several teams bidding for his services this time. Good for him he seems like a good guy.

Fenton and Traina Earn SEC Weekly Softball Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama senior outfielder Jennifer Fenton (Kennesaw, Ga.) and sophomore pitcher Jackie Traina (Naples, Fla.) garnered Southeastern Conference softball weekly honors, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Fenton was named the SEC Player of the Week while Traina was named the Pitcher of the Week.

The honor is a career first for Fenton while Traina nabbed the accolade in the circle for the second time. This marks the first time since Dani Woods and Stephanie VanBrakle on March 27, 2006, that two Crimson Tide players have earned both honors in the same week.

Fenton paced top-ranked Alabama at the plate with a .600 (6-for-10) average, scoring a team-high seven runs and swiping a team-best five bases. She also added a home run, four RBI and a .692 on base percentage. The senior had two multi-hit games and two multi-RBI contests during the week, stealing at least one base in three of the four contests.

After collecting a hit and scoring a run at No. 14 Oregon, Fenton scored twice and drove in two while also stealing two bases in the series opener against Mississippi. In game two Fenton batted a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI, a home run and a stolen base. In the series finale, Fenton reached base twice, scored twice and stole two bases.

Traina continued her winning ways as she earned the win in three of the four games played last week, moving her season total to 15-0. Traina sported a 0.93 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 15 innings. She gave up a combined six hits in three games last week, allowed one run or less in each of the three games and the highest hit total was three.

Traina went the distance at No. 14 Oregon, striking out 10, while allowing an unearned run on three hits. She kept the Ducks hitless until the fifth inning. After allowing two hits in the first inning in the series finale vs. Mississippi, Traina retired the last 13 batters. At the plate Traina batted .333 (2-for-6) and tied for the team-high with five RBI.

Alabama will remain at home all week as it will host Tennessee in a crucial SEC doubleheader on Wednesday, March 21. First pitch of game one will start at 4 p.m., as both games will air on CSS. UA will then host the Easton Alabama Challenge and welcome DePaul and Longwood for a weekend tournament that will have the Tide playing four games.
