TRips: Three Monday thoughts

Apparently, Jim Delany still believes that Jim Delany is a big deal.

  • Nailed it on Delaney, TR! Well done.

He and Michael Thompson, who finished T51 at the Players, have been very solid. Making the field at the Players was a big step for both. It'll be interesting to see who wins first.

  • TR,
Amanda Locke pitched a 3 hitter agianst the #5 seed in the NCAA tourney. That doesn't inspire a little more confidence? Also, the defence only allowed 2 runs in 3 games. It was awesome to see a 10-1, 3 hit, run rule game against the 2nd best team in the SEC and 5th best in the country while Jackie watched from the dugout. RTR

  • I'm still surprised that Delaney, Gee, and Smith are in their respective positions after their moves with players for the Sugar Bowl two years ago, and what came out afterwards... knowing the Big Ten's commitment to maintaining their moral authority, as well as their place on the pedestal. View from the Ivory Tower must be hard to give up.

Yes, it inspired some confidence, but the body of work suggests that Traina will shoulder 95 percent of the load, which isn't unusual for softball. If Locke can give them some quality innings in relief, great but she won't be out there in an elimination setting. Traina will be asked to do what Osterman, Abbott, Lawrie and others did before her: carry her team.

Also, Braud and Fenton will need to be very good at the top. Bombs are nice but they tend to be tougher to come by the deeper you get. They'll need the top to manufacture some runs. All in all, this team couldn't be in a better spot heading into regionals. Talented and intangibles are better than some previous UA teams.

  • Jim Delany knows that the most sensible format is a 4 team playoff featuring.. guess what? The 4 BEST teams, regardless of what happens in theIr divisions.

He realizes that the Big 10 will continue to be on the outside looking in in that format, especially with Oregon's consistency & the resurgence of USCw as well as the SEC annually fielding 2 of the best teams in football. So he comes up with a childish shot at the nation's top football program & demands some bogus requirement to grease the skids for another has-been Big 10 program to slide into a BCS playoff.

    Spot on, Travis.

That arrogance is why the big bowl of Shut Up soup Dodds served up to Delany was so great. Tasted like cold porridge and he made Delany like it.

I agree still looking at history it's the PAC 12 that is the overall hurdle. A Cal team that Bama beat in the CWS last year. Is now the top team in a very tough league. & nobody will be betting against ASU going back to back either. Even with a #2 overall seed. The title still goes through a couple PAC 12 teams most likely.

  • Delaney comes off as a winer because he has zero basis with which to argue as you so well pointed out Travis. Spot on with the comment that likened it to a non-qualifier spewing it's what about us statements, only those non-qualifiers always had an undefeated dog in that hunt when wining. Get relevant or get lost.
Thanks for the Article and those of you that tweet, get busy and get it out there !

Dodds saying the Big Ten and Pac 12 can have their Rose Bowl while everyone else proceeds with a playoff, and Delany saying at times that is an option, gives me a bad case of deja vu. Didn't we already see that play out in the 90s, only for the Big Ten and Pac 10 (at the time) to figure out that wasn't such a good deal for them?

Like you, I enjoy Dodds calling them out.

Can't argue with that and that's with UCLA and Arizona in "down" years.

I know right. & even an Oregon squad is dangerous enough to make a run at it also. LOL

  • Not that it matters here but I heard on a local B-ham radio show (the one that stinks) a writer from the SportingNews (I think) who was invited to eat with Delaney a few months ago. To hear him speak you would have thought Delaney wrote the book on a four team playoff and that NO non-conference champ should play for a title.

I found myself thinking this idiot bought what Delaney was selling completely. It just goes to show that some media outlets don't bother with original, unbiased thought. Just buy them a nice lunch and you got them in your pocket.

  • Travis, I sit here in awe at what you did. You took Jim Delaney as if he were a rag
doll, grabbed him by the heels and commenced to trash the room with his head as
the instrument. There is not much of him left now and it looks as if he will just have to shut up and take it. And TR, you dished it out to him! Good job, man, we all needed that. And so did Jim D. RTR!

I didn't see the quotes from Dodds in print. Did he say this in direct response to Delaney's most recent rant against Alabama? Or was it in some other context? Do you happen to have a link?

Would love to think that pretty much ALL the commishs have had enough of ol' Dumbarse Jim....
