TRips: Three Monday thoughts

  • crimsonbleeder said...

I didn't see the quotes from Dodds in print. Did he say this in direct response to Delaney's most recent rant against Alabama? Or was it in some other context? Do you happen to have a link?

Would love to think that pretty much ALL the commishs have had enough of ol' Dumbarse Jim....

See link. After this, Delany pretty backed down and moved on to the "conference champions" talk ...

Texas' Dodds: Big Ten, Pac-12 need to stop blocking playoff

Texas athletics director is ready for college football to leave the Big Ten and Pac-12 behind if the leagues don't want a playoff

  • Thanks TR!

Didn't see that before! So THANKFUL for Mr. Dodds to speak out on what we all are thinking and not pussyfoot around like (apparently) the other commishs (READ: MIKE SLIVE) are doing.

To me, it was a no brainer. Given his league's performance in the BCS, Delany dictating playoff terms would be like Slive laying out requirements for the Frozen Four.

  • Felt like I was watching a roast on comedy central for Delany. Great read.

  • Let's say they proceed with a playoff the way we want it. I bet there aren't 5 times the championship game pits 2 teams from the same division in the next 200 seasons. Alabama is easily the best program in the country right now. LSU is pretty badass too, whether you like to admit it or not. But how often will they both be SO dominant that the entire country sees fit to have them both in the top 4? The reason I ask that is, LSU had the best team they ever fielded last season, and Alabama had the best defense in the history of college football, IMO. Neither team is going to repeat that, simultaneously with the other, on a regular basis.

Now, I think they may be the 2 best teams several times over the next few years, but they won't both be so dominant as to get repeated rematches. However, over the span of all the major conference teams, Delany knows that his league stands an exponentially increased shot of getting 1 of 4 if the better conferences can never have 2. I mean..between the SEC, B12, and P10, the Big 10 is going to have to hope for a miracle to have a rep in the game once every 15 years or so. Even the ACC would be superior to them if not for Nebraska's potential going forward.

  • The Big 10 isn't far from having legit championship contenders again. Ohio St. and Michigan could be up there in the next year or 2 and Wisconsin has been very solid for a few years. Iowa, Michigan St., Nebraska, and Penn St. aren't bad teams either.

Do I think they're as good as our teams? No. Could they steal a win (even in a title game)? Absolutely. But to demand that only conference champions get in thus insuring one of their own make it, is ridiculous. Last year they didn't have anybody even close to deserving a shot at a title so you can see why he's complaining.

Like many others have pointed out the conference champions model makes no sense because not all conferences are equal. 4 teams is the "right" amount, but 8 is prob the only "fair" way so the conferences with a down year can still be represented.

But lets be honest, when's the last time ANYBODY said "that 7th ranked team really got screwed. They should have played for the title"!?

Slive has consistently saved his tough talk for the actual meetings where decisions are made. He does not, by and large, use the media to make his arguments. He makes them face to face in the sessions where it matters. Delaney running his mouth to the press just tells you that things aren't going his way behind closed doors. Slive remaining civil in public tells you that they are going his way where it matters.....

  • Essentially, Dodds and others told Delany, "no big deal, take your ball and go home."
Bwahahahaha!!!! Great article TR. That tool should read it.

  • Good article Travis. I myself am tired about hearing what Delaney wants. If he got his way, #10 Wisconsin would have played #1 LSU in the playoff game. Who wants to watch a #10 team play in a playoff for the NC team? I sure don't. I want to see the best 4 teams. If he had listened to Mike Slive back in 2008, we would have already had a playoff lined up. But the inevitable had to happen and an SEC team playing another SEC team in the BCS NC game, giving an SEC team their first loss, because no other conference could do it. After all, in 13 seasons in the BCS era, the SEC had been in 7 BCS NC games and won all 7. That is over 50%. Now, in 14 seasons, the SEC has 8 wins and 1 loss in the BCS NC game and 6 in a row, working on 7.
