TRips: Top three WRs of Saban era

Ranking the top three wide receivers of the Nick Saban era at Alabama ...

    Travis Reier

  • Julio was / is a beast & while Maze and Hall were very good college receivers in their own right , imo one or more WR's from the current roster will eventually surpass them on the top 3 list .

the question is which one(s) ?

  • every time I think of DJ Hall I remember the play where he had a TD pass bounce out of his hands in the endzone against Auburn only to have it bounce right into the arms of an Auburn defender. When I hear the name DJ Hall that play immediately pops up. It's like its seared into my brain.

Going to go that route, it has to be Amari Cooper IYAM.

You're not alone. That play and the ULM debacle really summed up 2007. Well, those and the "Textbook Five", of course. Always wondered what Hall would've done had he had another year of eligibility under Saban. Would he have turned things around off the field or would he have never made it to the Clemson game?

  • D. White would be one I would think, he has the talent to do it but he needs to be consistent with it.

Right now, I'd probably go Christion Jones and Amari Cooper.

My money is on him never making it to Atlanta for the Clemson game, especially since Saban knew he had Julio coming up. Quite a shame that there was such a disparity between his on-field talent and off-field character/work ethic.

I know what you mean. That play still makes me sick to my stomach. If he simply hangs on to an easy catch, momentum and the lead is our's at halftime and I think we win that game.

Can't argue with his production but he'll never be one of my favorites or anything. Had a huge catch against UT in 05 to help set up the GW FG though...so there's that.

As for our current WR's, I'm really looking forward to seeing many of them blossom - Bell, Norwood, Cooper, Shinn, Woodson, Black, Williams....but I might be most excited about Christion Jones. Kid is just a playmaker it seems. Regardless of who steps up, we've got all the talent we need.

Don't think he would have because he didn't seem to want to put in the effort on the field, much less off it. Just wasn't mature enough at the time IYAM. Don't know his stats but Nikita Stover was my "fan favorite" after making some clutch catches in games. Kind of like Hanks, not flashy but underrated and perhaps undervalued.

  • Duron Carter could be honorable mention simply because of the number of posts alone referring to his eligibility.(g) Christion Jones could be special as well. Football just sticks to his hands.

speaking of fan favorites who didn't put up large numbers I was always partial to Matt Caddell. I remember him coming up huge in an Arkansas game making an amazing catch in the back of the endzone to win the game. Caddell came up huge in this drive against Arkansas in 07

    Agree with this...
I was at the 05 UT game so I'll never forget DJ's catch to get in FG position. But most of his career I'd just as soon forget.

  • I've never figured out why punt teams try and cover punts with slow white guys.

Freeze Maze's return at the :17 clip. You see two big, hefty linemen. Why? For protection? You can get effective protection with big linebacker-size types. Watch Alabama cover punts, with guys like Nico, Dre, Upshaw and Hightower. You know. ALL-AMERICANS and difference-makers. The punt team is THE most important special team.

Think about it, they're trying to cover punts with two big linemen-types, another white guy and the punter. Effectively, they're trying to do it with 7. Stupid.

Georgia tried to do the same thing against the Honey Bastard and they torched them for two long returns to break the game open. STUPID. Put guys on there that can do it all: protect, run and tackle.

I work with a family member of his now. I was at that game and it was electric.
